That's how he sees it. The thing is, he just fough two huge names, and banked tens of millions of pounds. Reports are he made 20 or 30 million in the Jones fight alone. Should Calzaghe only expect to fight big name fighters from here on forever, or are there other challenges, like fighting the biggest threat or the best talent? What specifically does fighting another big name do for Calzaghe's fame and/or wallet, and do you think he's taking the right fundamental approach at this stage in his career?

Jones v Calzaghe was on Setanta in the UK.
I got Setanta for 5 pound a month for 3 months. Inc lots of boxing and football within that period. Its a great deal considering what the PPV charges are.

Joe Calzaghe earned $10m from Jones fight

JOE CALZAGHE earned $10m from his showdown with Roy Jones Jnr, Wales on Sunday can reveal.

Despite the fight attracting only half of the anticipated TV audience and failing to sell out the famous Madison Square Garden, it was still the biggest purse collected by the Welsh boxing superstar.

But the Welshman’s camp said they were left “disappointed” at the lower than expected pay-per-view audience for the clash.
Calzaghe’s purse for the fight at Madison Square Garden, his first attempt at self-promotion, was largely dependent on the pay-per-view revenues from HBO. The American broadcasting giants were acting as the producer and distributor for the fight.
HBO, who charged $50 per household for the programme, were expecting around 500,000 subscriptions for the fight. But it is understood they only received just under 250,000.

That is considerably less than the one million viewers they attracted for last December’s highly-anticipated fight between Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Ricky Hatton which cost $55.

But it is more than the 190,000 viewers for last month’s bout between middleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik and veteran Bernard Hopkins, which was also priced at $50.

It is not known what percentage of the pay-per-view takings Calzaghe was entitled to. But, because he was co-promoting the fight with Jones, it is thought the poor viewing figures could have cost him up to $3m.

The pay-per-view revenues are the second factor to reduce the Newbridge fighter’s purse. With an attendance of 14,162 in an arena that holds up to 20,000 people, ticket sales were also unexpectedly low.

Gareth Williams, lawyer for Calzaghe Promotions, was quick to point out that the 36-year-old still made a considerable profit. And, without having to pay a percentage of his purse to a promoter, it was more than he had received for any other fight in his illustrious career.

Williams said the results were just the latest example of how the credit crunch is affecting all aspects of business on both sides of the Atlantic. He believes many boxing fans in America simply couldn’t afford to pay $50 to watch the fight.
Williams also stressed the figures were not a reflection of Calzaghe’s popularity, after what most pundits have described as one of the best fights of his undefeated career. But he admitted the figures were far lower than everyone involved expected. “The pay-per-view numbers were very disappointing,” he said. “They took everyone by surprise.

“The blame for this has been put on the economic situation in America, which will have hindered people’s ability to pay for the fight.

“But overall this still has to be seen as a very successful promotion for Joe on his first attempt. The main disappointment is that many people didn’t get to see one of the greatest fights in recent years.”

Despite the fight starting at 4.30am, viewing figures in the UK were much better. British rights holders Setanta Sports saw their numbers peak close to the 500,000 mark.

The show is also understood to have attracted thousands of new subscribers to the channel.

But, instead of offering a pay-per-view package, Setanta included the bout as part of their standard subscription package. And the Irish broadcasters paid a flat fee for their rights to the fight which meant their numbers did not impact at all on Calzaghe’s purse.

An HBO spokesperson said they were contractually forbidden from releasing any information about the precise viewing figures in America.

No way did JC make 20/30mil for the RJJ fight. Hatton didn't even make that for the FM fight. He made 14mil sterling, from what I read in the papers JC made 7/9mil which is a massive amount for a fight that wasn't big.

As far as the Calzaghe/Jones fight goes..

Interesting that they couldn't even sell out Madison Square Garden in a densely populated city like NYC, a city that loves their boxing and tens of thousands of Welsh fans coming over here..

Shows you that everyone (even casual fans) knew the fight was bull**** from the start and were not willing to dish out the $$ for a crappy non-competitive fight

he aint holding a title belt so he should be able to pick and chose who he wants to fight.
he aint got no mandatories to worry about.
it is just a case of who is going to bring the money.
he said he aint given froch and dawson a pay day and there not a big enough name and said he dont do rematches so that cancels out b hop and kessler.
so who is left??????
either he fights a name at smw or cw or he will have to fight johnson because that is the only fight which can bring any money left...or retire of course.

I'm talking sterling I believe you are talking dollors. Tho no one knows for certain it's pretty similar figures i.e 7mill sterling is like 10.5 mill dollors.

A shame cause we used to get 2 dollors for a pound LOL, it's good for JC tho.

and when calzaghe fought hopkins , hopkins brought 4,000 to a 20,000 arena and calzaghe about 9 to 10,000

dawson brought about 300 to 600 to watch him fight tarver in las vegas.

how many would follow dawson to waTCHhim fight a euro bum like calslappy and what is the fight worth ?

its why the fight though the best one out there competitive wise is not a real barn burner
