I've been trying to figure it out tonight after watching what might as well have been a replay of Wlad-Brewster 2. Against righties in particular, he can land the jab so often and effectively that they are given a steady beating that won't really make them leave their feet. Since he has no need to rely on power punches like the average heavyweight does, we get fewer spectacular knockouts, or they take place in the later rounds, with the notable exception going to Ray Austin. Of course his safety-first style also comes into play as well. The extra caution gives us fewer thrills as he rarely tries to land that one big shot that really puts the hurt on his opponent. They also talked about his power vs. Lewis' power (HBO of course), but I'm not so sure Wlad is throwing with bad intentions very often. Then again, if I could beat a man with one hand and not get hit much in return, that's a pretty logical thing to do. How many heavyweights can say they literally beat a man with one hand (Austin) and just about did over 12 rounds (Ibragimov)? If his jab were 50-60% as effective as it is we'd be seeing Wlad in "real fights" quite often and many people would love him - either he gets you or you get him, but it's going to be spectacular either way. In some ways I feel that Wlad would have to be a worse boxer to not get the "Wlad is boring" hate that he gets.
He has the best powerleft jab since prime Larry Holmes. He fights tall as he should and has great lateral movement for such a tall, massive boxer. He can hook off the jab and can nearly finish an opponent with terrific powerful and accurate right hands. All this spells trouble for his opponents and makes his fights seem boring. They're just one-sided because he is a huge man that also happens to be a great technical boxer with two-fisted power.
He just fight smart and conservative instead of brawling to win with all out power, which I think he could also do if he wanted to. :bbb
I too think his jab is the best i can think of since Holmes. He is very, very accurate and powerful with it also he throws it at a good rate. My only problem with him with Manny now is that he doesnt throw his hook off the jab as often, to open up the laser straight right.
Best jab in the division right now. However Rock showed that you can lessen it's accuracy and effectiveness by getting really low. When he began to fight tall, that's when Wlad hit more frequently.
Good point. His left hand (jab and hook) shots are so effective, that when coupled with his size advantage, you end up with a guy who don't really need but one hand...........LOL But as you said, if his left hand was not what it is, and if it were somewhat lackluster, he'd then obviously be a different kind of fighter who'd have to rely almost solely on his power........ But as he is, very big AND with a supreme right hand, he can get away with beating his opponents with mainly one hand. A left arm that is that sharp, fast, and powerful is not a bad asset to have, if you ask me, even if it does make you appear somewhat boring, at times. But that is boxing. A win is a win, and a dominating performance is a dominating performance. That's what everyone wishes they could acheive.
But that said, I think Wlad's jab was amazingly effective today. Good GOD it was sharp, fast, and accurate. Rahman's head was all over his shoulders, as it landed with sharp accuracy. I think a couple of those jabs had him hurt, even.
There are two guys fighting now that I think have an amazing jab that does a lot of damage. One is Mikkel Kessler and the other is Wladimir. I've seen both beat guys up with basically just a jab until they ended it with some hard right-hands.
I enjoy watching Klitschko stick to a working gameplan and just accumulatively build up damage on an opponent, stopping them late. He has learned how to fight tall, and I look forward to seeing him dismantle Valuev.
