...but could boxing institute knockout bonuses like the UFC? I guess the money would have to be fronted by the promoter or the organization. I don't know if it would even work, but I think the sport needs to find something to motivate these guys to put on more exciting fights. This comes on the heels of the Versus card last night, of course, which featured two extremely boring heavyweight fights that both went the distance.
In the Philippine boxing circuit, the promoters/organizers/hosts give some extra bonus prize for the "Fight of the Night". They award both boxers. It doesnt matter if youre the undercard fight, the supporting fight or the main event. Whichever fight was the most entertaining that night, gets the prize.
I like this idea. Not keen on knockout bonuses, though - it's great if a boxer wins by knockout through skill, but I wouldn't want every fight to be a wild slugfest.
it wont matter.... guys are ultimately trying to knock the other guy out anyway.....its not gonna make ko rates increase
Maybe it's not a KO bonus, per se, but there has to be something they can do to prevent guys from just going through the motions. Maybe it's simply a earn more if you win type concept. Whether you win by points or KO. You get paid more if you win. Maybe it's that simple. Take a look at the Malik Scott-Raphael Butler or James Toney fights yesterday. Something needs to be done to make those fights more entertaining. Maybe money is the key?
"Knockout bonuses"? This type of **** isn't boxing, it isn't in any way a part of the history of, or the legacy of the sport of boxing. There is a trend of "sport" becoming more and more barbaric, extreme and wild, like these ufc, and varous "cage" type deals that have sprung up in recent years. Why not just have boxers wear the cestus on their fists, or something else equally lethal and see who can cripple, or maim a guy the bestest or the fastest? Fans today, particularly the younger ones are unhappy as hell with the efforts of Wlad Klitschko, for instance, and are way too impatient with a style that is too controlled and cautious, and they want more blood spilled and more rock 'em sock 'em type "gladiator" type affairs instead. They wouldn't be satisfied with any era of boxing because it would have been too tame for them. They would have probably thought Louis, Dempsey or Marciano too pussified for their liking, not to mention Ali, and all the fights that he failed to score a brutal knockout, or even a knockdown. Fans like this need to abandon boxing and watch the inferior participants of the ufc hit each other while lying on the deck, and **** like that for their entertainment.
