Wlad stopped Rahman earlier than Maskaev... can you imagine the brutal finish that would have happened if the ref would not have saved Rahman? I really only see 3 common opponents. Peter, who Wlad dominated and hurt... who stopped Maskaev. Rahman, who Wlad stopped earlier than Mazkaev, and Derrick Jefferson, who Wlad stopped earlier than Maskaev. (and Derrick Jefferson actually broke his ankle against Maskaev)

Also, considering that Wlad has fought better competition as a whole, as well as more fights... and has a much higher knockout percentage... I really don't understand how you could feel that way.

All you have to do is watch Wlad fight. It only takes a few jabs before his opponents are in complete fear of his power.

 

i'ts overrated.......i think he has GOOD power at HW, but he's doesn't have that 1punch power unless his opponent is severely weakened from eating jabs or exhausted

in terms of p4p power, he's no Juanma, no Torres, and i dont even think he's a David Haye honestly

 

I think his power is phenomenal, not just on single shots that are torqued up, but on everything he throws at range. Every opponent that mentions him talks about his chin, but in recent years, nobody has the skill or the will to genuinely try and execute a gameplan of getting to him- and that has everything to do with how they react to his power once he hits them. Fighters' attitudes immediately change from "I just need to land a few shots and take this guy out" to "Oh ****, I need to protect myself because a jab shouldn't hit that hard". It makes for boring fights because Wlad's content to break them down slowly, and his opponents act like a deer in the headlights and cut their own output dramatically.

So, you wind up with people in the guard for nearly entire rounds (in some cases, fights) even though Wlad doesn't throw a ton, because nobody wants to open up their own offense at the risk of getting hit with a big shot in return. Heavyweights with KO power aren't that rare- but heavyweights with gameplan-changing power and the ability to deliver it are hard to find. Wlad's got that kind of power, regardless of how the hairs get split as far as exactly how hard he hits.

The Ring's had Wlad as their #1 heavyweight for years now.
If they were such 'haters' they'd have found a way to fiddle it otherwise, like whack Vitali back up there or something.

 

According to Freddie Roach, he hits harder than Tyson. Though that does not surprise me.

I suppose he is being compared to the likes of Foreman and Lewis. Whatever the reason, which may include style at times, power will never be a problem of his.

 

his power isnt the problem, his lack of bottle the let his hands go and finish oponent off is his problem. Lennox got critisised for being over cautias, but wlad had a corpse in front of him from round 1 onwards and he still couldnt get the KO.

With the exception of Sanders, whom he barely touched, he wobbled, staggered, hurt, stunned, knocked down or knocked out EVERY opponent that he faced. Every single one of them. That is very impressive.

 

Wlad has serious power....he has been a regular in my current biggest punchers lists for years.

Its just he fights a lot more conservatively lately and doesnt use it as much as he could...He can turn a fight on its head with one shot.

 

I'm assuming that you're basing this off of the fact that Rahman held up well when Wlad hit him with his straight right. Thompson was able to take a good amount of right hands as well in the last fight so that would make it look as though his power may be a bit overrated when in actuality there's really an explanation for those two instances.

Wlad's got tremendous power. Thompson's got a better chin than most gave him credit for and Rahman's major knockout losses stemmed from punches he didn't see coming. Maskaev's right hand was mixed in with a flurry (Rock never saw it), Lewis threw the right hand behind a left hook, and Tua hit Rock after the bell. When Rahman sees the right hand coming he can take it.

 

I have been thinking the same. Both thompson and rahman were hit with big rights and both took them well.

SInce wlad has gotten manny in his corner he throws his right shorter, without much movement. Not going all out, he doesnt leave openings the way he used to when thowing with all he had.
He now follows through with the shot, pushing the last ounces of power into the face of his opponent. Thats prety clear if you watch his knock downs of byrd, brock and thompson.

Even if he doesnt take his opponent out he wears them down , takes it toll getting hammered by a 245 pound guy for several rounds...

 

His last opponents were all on total defense modes, they anticipated the shots coming, they were guarded up and ready. It's far easier to take a shot when you do that, it's when you take a shot while throwing or taking a shot you didn't see coming that guys get seriously rocked.
