Being a massive Cotto fan I was gutted when he got battered by Margarito and it does seem like he does not have the power to beat him. He through the kitchen sink at him and Margarito just kept coming and coming.

What new tactics if any could Cotto employ to beat Margarito.

Box...and keep boxing for 12 full rounds. Cotto showed he had thr ability to beat Margo to the punch, find the gaps in his defence and win rounds, he cant afford to stay in front of Tony and trade in the trenches or he'll get in trouble again.

Cotto is good enough to win a rematch if he has the right gameplan!

Even if his fitness over 12 with Tony M does improve that is not enough to win him the fight. He needs more than that.

That's more like it.....and as long as he stays off the ****ing ropes! It seemed they were his second home in the first fight.

Same as last time, just keep it up for a few more rounds. Stamina.

Shouldn't you be chopping logs and knocking down houses in preperation for Vitali rather than being on Eastside. tut-tut.

Change his fighting style. He is a guy who wears guys down and KTFO of them through accumulation. That is not happening with AM.

Cotto has to box as he did for the first half of the fight for the entire fight. He has to avoid bending over and taking those nasty uppercuts. He has to try to sneak some rounds to conserve his energy. If he can make the 12 rounds and he is not too tired, then he has a good chance, but he needs a good gameplan. AM won't stop and Cotto must already know that. At least that is one good thing.

Stamina was the only ability in absence in fight 1 - in my eyes. Everything was immacculate until the start of the 7th round. What else does he need?

Cotto completely outclassed Marg in the first half of the fight.

Just avoid throwing energy sapping power blows and school him.

Even though Im a big Cotto fan...Im not totally confident he can beat Marga..I think Tony has his number.

Miguel just doesnt have the natural durability or stamina to hang with a guy as big, tough and intense as AM. Some guys just dont have stamina...Kostya Tszyu for example, you will hardly find a harder more scientific trainer but for some reason he always faded in fights.
Miguel has shown this tendency more then once and he would have been in the best possible shape that night.

I like to think though if he made some tactical adjustments like holding a little and not trying to go punch for punch with a bloke like AM, he can eek it out this time...possibly wishful thinking but ill force myself to believe it until they fight again.

Anyone who says Cotto only needs to do this and just has to do that are kidding themselves..this fight will be hell again for him and he truly needs to be mentally ready before tackling Tony again.

He needs to box like he did the first 5 rounds in his previous fight, only for 12 rounds without getting tagged as much.

Margarito wins this every time, he is much taller and has a better reach.

He doesn't. Sometimes you can make all the right adjustments and come back and beat a fighter that had your number the first time out but there are other times in which the will factor will just reproduce a result similar to the first one.

We saw it with Cintron. It appeared as though Kermit had gotten back on track since the loss to Margarito in '05. Steward hopped on board, a little winning streak was put together, and a renewed sense of confidence was there. Surely he'd give Margarito a better fight this time around one would have to think. Cintron did everything that he could to fight better but once again Margarito was just too much. He just kept coming and kept throwing punches. Didn't matter that it was in AC with plenty of support from Puerto Rican fans. It was a matter of will and I'm afraid that Cotto, who has already had his will broken by Margarito once before, will suffer the same fate. Why get into strategies and techniques when it's just gonna come down to Margarito's ability to impose himself on the opposition? There are some guys out there who, through sheer toughness and relentlessness, simply will not let you do the things you would normally do. Hell, it took everything Paul Williams had left to win the 12th round (and as a result, the fight) and stave off a furious Margarito rally. Antonio's just one of those guys who won't stop coming at you and as good as Cotto is, he won't be able to change that.

    1. Don't sit on the ropes and take 3 consecutive uppercuts at any time.

    2. His footwork was a little predictable at times I found, he was pretty much just moving in big wide circles. I haven't thought this through too much but maybe after landing those great combo's he was landing, tie AM up ala FMJ vs HATTON. Or perhaps get a little more awkward and move in more random lines to frustrate AM.

    3. His "lean forward" defense style really doesnt work IMO. He quite clearly just leans forward and gives AM the chance to rip that uppercut right into his face.

I think Cotto could pull off a rematch, but he really needs to build up that stamina. Fight those brilliant first 6 rounds, and then do it again! Margo is a freak of nature, his jogging forward hunting style of fighting would be totally demoralising, but I think he can be beaten if you make things a little bit more awkward and unorthodox.

    Just my opinion.

HOLD!!! He didn't tie Margo up once... Simple. Plus, he needs more stamina.
