Since when does getting a gift decision warrant a title shot. Fightnews said "it was the jabs and awkward style of Fres Oquendo that almost did Toney in, almost erasing an opportunity for a title shot" or something like that.

First of all, Toney shgould've lost that fight. He connected less & he looked really slow & sloppy. Even if he really won he still wouldn't desere a shot for beating Fres Oquendo.

James Toney is ranked 10th by the IBF, which is ridiculous IMO. If Toney wants his title shot maybe Wlad should knock his ass out before he fights Povetkin.

Dude, he's James "Controversial Decision" Toney!! His career pattern has always followed gift wins or harsh near-shutout losses.

I would still like to see Thompson vs Toney. Thompson will take him apart and win most rounds.

    Agreed.
There are already rumors Toney-Thompson could take place in February 2009.

A close win over Oquendo will not give him a title shot, but a victory over top 10 contender Thompson will.

Well, it does say 'an opportunity'...not definitely a title shot next.

I agree with the author of this thread.Toney needs to qualify for a world championship first before challenging anyone. His "win" against Oquendo did very little to raise his stock. A fight against the high rated Thompson would certainly be the right move at this point of Toney's career. Let's face it, the Toney that fought Oquendo on saturday would have lost a clear cut decision to Thompson. I don't care what the Fatman or Gossen says, it wasn't Oquendo's style that made him look bad but Toney's inability to match Oquendo's fitness beyond round 6. It is very hard, even for a long time Toney fan like me, to find an excuse for the kind of shape he was in on Saturday night. Toney needs to be kept active against top opposition, if this can't be done, he should call it a day and let the younger generation take over. I for my part take absolutely no pleasure in seeing an overweight, unmotivated Toney take on a bunch 2nd of tear opponents...

It's not a gift decision, I think the decision was alright, he deserved the nod by a point or so. I agree Toney looked slow and sloppy, very disappointing performance, then again nobody has looked good against Oquendo so far. And Oquendo didn't connect anything outside some jabs himself. They both looked crap.

No way Toney deserves a title-shot, and I'm a big fan of his. Just like Evander Holyfield doesn't deserve one. Goossen should reschedule Toney-Thompson and try to make it an eliminator for the IBF belt. If Toney looks the way he did against Oquendo he will lose that one, so he has to make an effort, really get his weight down and clearly beat Tony Thompson - only then he should get a title-shot. If he can't get himself in shape anymore and beat Tony Thompson he should hang em up.

co-signed, that fat slob should retire....he's a disgrace to his country, his race, to boxing

at this point in Toney's career he has no reason being in any kind of title fight, not even a NABF title

i would not mind him getting a title shot.
    he has a name .

if he fights one of the klitchko`s he has no chance, but just like david haye he has run his mouth off.

James Toney is the fat Zab Judah . Both don't deserve to be mentioned anywhere near a title fight but both seem to keep coming back with **** performance after **** performance and get discussed far more than their faded talents deserve.

you can't really compare James Toney and Zab Judah. I mean Toney, just like Judah, never reached his full potential due to lack of discipline and focus, but he still achieved a lot in his career and should get credit for it, he's been around for nearly 20 years and he has a great record even if his run at HW seems more and more to be a dead end..
