America just hates Joe. Doesn't take the moronic Dan Rafael to realize that.:-(

I'd say most American's dislike Joe. The quirky ******* types like Gordon Ramsey and Simon Cowell go over well here (yet even as an *******, they both show their softer side as well), but Joe isn't quirky, he's just an ******* and pretty much always an *******. He never comes acrossed as humble. Lennox Lewis was an *******, who talked a lot of ****, but yet he still was likeable.

Joe just really isn't the likeable type.. as talented as he is.

Respected Rafael who jumped on the boxing bandwagan in the late 90's. Let's face it, Dan Rafael wasn't a boxing lover and will probably jump on the next sporting craze when he feels like it. Calzaghe made some good points and if everyone thinks the sport is better than ever they are seriously kidding themselves.

Cassell's making up his own history here. Hopkins backed out of a fight with Calzaghe in 2002, and Glen Johnson wasn't anything special at Super Middleweight- he didn't even have a winning record there if I'm not mistaken.

Hopkins wasn't prime when Jones fought him- it was his first title shot.

Johnson wasn't prime when Hopkins beat him- he hadn't even beaten a top 30 contender going into that fight.

Toney and Hopkins never fought each other, neither did Toney and Johnson, and Roy didn't fight Johnson himself until the twilight of his career, along with the (in my opinion of course) much needed rematch between Hopkins and Jones never happening. Part of this is because they hit their primes at different points, something this "distinguished columnist" doesn't bother to mention.

All in all, a radioactive turd is just as distinguished as Mike Cassell's commentary. They're also both filled with ****.

He never made this claim. You're reading the sentence incorrectly. Anyway, rest assured that there are no shortages of excuses for Calzaghe's relatively mediocre level of competition.

I don't like Calzaghe and I'm British. His resume is awful and he believes potential challengers are undeserving.

Are there any Calzaghe fans who believe that all these journalists just may have a point; that maybe everyone doesn't have a vendetta against Calzaghe, and that some of the criticism is valid?

As soon as I saw the words 'Respected columnist' next to Fat Dan's name I did this >>>

Fat Dan Rafael is an idiot - how anyone that size could be expected to be able to offer valid comments on a sport is beyond me...

As for other US journalists having similar opinions? Well, 7 out of 10 US boxing experts were predicting Sharmba Mitchell to smash Tszyu in their rematch (Rafael was one of them), none of them gave Tszyu a chance, and look what happened :yep

I think it's safe to say thier opinions are about as valid as anyone elses on this board, and therefore don't hold much weight.

Well, all signs pointed that Sharmba Mitchell SHOULD have beated Tszyu in the rematch. Sharmba pre-injury was giving Zoo hell.. and Mitchell was one of the hottest fighters going into that fight.

It was a total mismatch, but it caught a lot of people by surprise, myself included.

Boxing is dying to a point, **** shows being put on PPV and organisations taking belts away from champions because they won't pay the sanctioning fees. To attract a younger audience Superfights should be on terrestrial TV or we will lose the next generation to the sport.

Some of the criticism is indeed valid, and I'm disappointed that Joe said what he did. I'm not going to try and defend the comments. If he was disillusioned because he was expecting a bigger reaction here and didn't get it, there were better ways to express it. I still hope he continues fighting and will cheer him no matter the decision, though.

The other problem I have is that some of the journalist's valid criticism gets lost when they go on tangents based more on backlash than facts. So, I think some of the points are fair (especially as it relates to not biting the hand that feeds you), but others fall victim to their own hyperbole.

Who says Dan Rafael is respected? The man is a media puppet. Rafael gets inside info to hype fights maybe a week before they sign, and pretty much caters to those giving him information. That is his career in a nut shell. I guess Calzaghe people didn't pay their dues with Rafael. Keep up the good work Danny boy. Mike Katz has lost his best stuff. Boxing needs a new player hater.

PS: Is it true, you can purchase a Rafael fat head for 50% off?
