This is what some people don't seem to get. As an athlete, you can be a ridiculous person in the ring, out of the ring, or both. As bad as Tyson has always been, if you ever met the guy, he was always appreciative of fans. I don't know if I get the same impression of Joe.
Old ffs Joe's 37 himself you knobs,he beat Hopkins who was too scared to fight fair and then humiliated Roy Jones Jnr ,shot yes pretty much as shot as Del a Hoya. If Hopkins is so old an useless why the hell did he beat the crap out of the ghost who KO'd Taylor who had beat Hopkins twice.! He is an unbeaten great as it will say in the record books, like it or not. Latif thats strange "a boxer who loves to talk about himself, what an unkown phenomenon"
Hoya - Pac and jones calz are not even comparable. First of all, Hoya was the MAJOR favorite to win against Manny, and Pacman pulled of the upset, no matter how many have come out the woodworks now with 20/20 hindsight. Roy was a huge underdog, hadn't fought a top-tier boxer in three years, and it was quite obvious to even the casual fan he was but a glimmer of his former self. So how exactly does he deserve credit for beating a totally shot fight for name recognition only? Fact of the matter is, Joe only really put his balls on the line TWICE in his career -- against Kessler and Lacy -- in the span of a 10 year + championship reign! And the one time he thought he'd waited long enough for father time to eat away at a truly legitimate fighter in bernard, he barely eeked out the victory. All this, and the guy has the nerve to speak as though his resume is the calibre of a SRR. atsch
Calzaghe has forgotten the meaning of respect. He now is happy to make judgements about Froch and say he has beaten no one while he beats a shot roy jones, loses to bernard hopkins, wins agaisnt an untested kessler and defends a wbo belt 20 times.
Joe Calzaghe.... Here is a question... Is he the biggest fighter in history to transcend opinion? As in - is there another top level fighter who transcends opinion more than him? Look at this forum - mention the name Calzaghe... He's either the greatest in history - or the biggest conman in the world - would slap Frank Abagnale onto the next PanAM flight! DISCUSS!!!!!
Not sure what you guys are talking about. People have talked **** about him since as long as I can remember. And when Calzaghe says the truth, people get angry at him? People will always hate Calzaghe just like with Mayweather. Nuff' said.
It doesn't matter whether Del a Hoya 'was' favourite,he was shot to hell and weight drained from the get go,the result was still the same decimation.Hopkins was desperate to fight Jones after Pavlik why? because he wanted it on his record that he had beaten Jones in a rematch,he didn't give a shite whether he was shot or not he was just thinking about his record
When I'm really honest with myself I wonder if there is a deep dislike of Joe's personality that limits my ability to rate him objectively. I've always hated him. I noticed a nasty mean streak in him some years ago. He gets this aura of wounded pride about him for some reason. Sometimes it's that and sometimes it's just base meanness. He's not a little guy, but his personality smacks of 'small man syndrome'. Perhaps it's something to do with the bullying he recieved at school. He always seemed like a man desperate for validation, and when he got it after Lacy and Kessler, he rushed to the conclusion that there is nothing for him to prove and became a delusional dickhead. There is just something a lttle off about the guy. Considering who his dad is, maybe it's genetics.
You think that? I'm surprised. I would love to believe that but it seemed to me that rounds 5 - 12 Hopkins just slightly lost all of them because he threw nothing. Yeah, he landed the most effective punches, but there were not enough of them.
Maybe he is just someone who has sacrificed their childhood, has been training since he was 8 years old, whilst other kids were having fun and stuffing down sweets he was making weight, running in the snow and rain, fighting year in and year out, training, fighting, training, fighting... and then finally becomes professional, beats everyone again..becomes world champion, took the belt off chris eubank as a raw kid.... has been unbeaten as a professional fighter, and has beaten everyone put in front of him. went to america and beat hopkins, put the myth of Kessler to bed, battered the second coming of superman (so the yanks told us before the fight) Jeff Lacy. If anyone on here has ever fought, ever had to put the training in, the effort, they wouldnt be on here slagging him off. Yeah, so hes a bit arrogant at times. Is that the best you can come up with? listen to yourselves. Go and become a fighter, stay unbeaten for your entire career, and then come on here and slag him off. I will listen to you then. This site is full of people who have never fought, never had to train, just imagine the skill and dedication it took, the sacrifices for Calzaghe to be in the position he is in, he may have had a few easy fights along the way, who didnt? ask tyson how hard it was to fight Bruce Seldon, or alex stewart, go and look at any fighters record and it there will be a few tomato cans. Think carefully before you start a thread like this. Its ****ing pathetic.
Wow. Post of the year. Best thing I've read on here for a long long time - props matey, cant argue with one single thing.
tell you what mate..it does my head in.. "lacy will batter him"...so he beats up lacy so badly, he should have been arrested for attempted murder. then its.."right, hes ducking kessler" so, yawn...he beats kessler.. then its "pavlik will smash calzaghe" this time, joe dosent have to do **** all, because the white-boy killer hopkins does it for him. now its.."hes ducking froch" how many more times? its laughable. Give the guy some ****ing credit.
earnt a load of money? so what!!! look how long it took him to get in the Big Pay league. he was unbeaten champion for TEN YEARS. So what if he has made some money now..why shouldnt he? what he said about Roy Jones being washed up was hypocritial, and he shouldnt have fought him, but would you turn down $5M for a relatively easy pay day? i ****ing wouldnt. De la hoya comes out of retirement once a year to fight for more than that, and you are slagging calzaghe??
Beside DLH-PAcman the two Calzaghe-fight had the biggest live-gate-fee. Both times ~14K in attendance with very expensive ticket-prices. In both fight (Hopkins over 9 K, RJJ 8K) more than 50% of the crowd were ppl from GB. Which other fighter could bring tousands of ppl across the atlantic TWICE in a year??? Rafael can **** himself.
