117-111...I was going for Mundine, I had money on him, I believed he could do it. I was looking for rounds to score for him but I couldnt give it any closer then that. Mundine put on a good performance against a clearly superior opponent but I tend to feel about that fight that he was more of a nuisance then a threat...He gave Mikkel a hard time with his slickness (which had improved a lot) and he recovered from the times he was hurt very well...but he never pressed the action enough and honestly I dont think the shutout card was totally out of line (though it didnt reflect the competitiveness of Choc overall), there was hardly a round that Mundine won clearly..Even the one he landed the big right hand in, Kessler had been clearly winning the round up until then. I dont feel it was close to be honest...About 9 rounds of the fight were competitive rounds most of which Kessler clearly edged, I mean they werent landslide rounds but you could not argue them for Mundine for the most part...And about 3 rounds that either Kessler dominated or very clearly won. Mikkel did fight within himself a little but thats his style aswell and he was probably still concerned about the injury...I think he has come along since then.
When you watch it again you may be surprised. You'd have to be seriously blind not to give Mundine round 1, round 9, and round 12 among others. Kessler had a very hard time catching Mundine cleanly and threw alot of combinations that did nothing but miss, land on the gloves, and hit the shoulders. When Kessler did make contact it would move Mundine's whole body - something that was aided by the twisted body language of Mundine. Kessler seemed to break Mundine's nose but got tactically outmanuevered and outscored quite a bit. It's definately worth looking at.
I don't know where to see this fight except the first 3 rounds on Youtube. It looks to me as if it was competitive, but Kessler controlled the ring a little more (Mundine hung on the ropes too much) and the slo-mo showed that he was more accurate esp when Mundine was covering up, which is hard to see from the stands. Maybe Mundine isn't quite elite as a fighter, but DAMN he seems like a good businessman.
Definately don't agree with that. Mundine is a poll option because there's a very strong argument that he won this fight on clean and effective punching + pure scoring. If you like to score on aggression and activity, effective or otherwise, it's still a close fight. Either way.
I have never actually sat down and scored the fight, just watched it, but the 108-120 score was an absolute farce. It was much more competitive than that. That version of Mundine was quite a good boxer and improved further in 2006, a shame he never pushed himself.
Pfffft. I favour clean punching. Can understand a Hopkins win over Slappy, for example. I don't know how anyone could entertain a Mundine victory. Even here in Australia where the Mundine nuthugging is extravagant, nobody said that.
Calzaghe hardly hit anything but Kesslers shoulders and gloves in round 3 of their fight, yet there was no doubt that Calzaghe won that round, and throughout the fight he missed more shots than stock analysts missed in their predictions this year, but that's still better than waiting it out doing nothing. As far as I remember, Mundine didn't throw S*** in the 12'th round.
:huh:yikes I really can't see that. That is the first time I've ever heard somebody question this, it was easy to score.
115 - 113: Mundine :smooch If you want to see this the way I saw it make sure you have a media player that has slow motion. I didn't presume any shots were landing. I made sure.
What are the others?? I thought is could have been a 10-2 for Kessler to be honest but I gave a close one to Mundine. Mundine wasnt landing on Kessler either for the most part, most shots were falling short or getting caught by Kessler. I have watched this fight many times...I just dont see it that way. Kessler was the ring general, he landed more blows and clearly the more effective ones, Choc showed the better defense but Kessler wasnt that far behind him, he was moving forward making the fight and still not getting hit much. Kessler got the nod for almost all 4 criteria in most rounds. I have never heard anyone score this fight for Mundine...Not even Mundine. A wide score may seem unfair because it was competitive for nearly the whole fight but thats the way boxing is scored sometimes...A legitimate shutout can be a near fight of the year but you can have a 7-5 verdict which was a beatdown.
