Thoughts no how it would go down in their primes?

Interesting match up. If i think about too much i just get sad as you're matching up two fighters who have both been disabled by the sport. bloody hell.
g-man would have probably stopped him but watson was a highly skilled technician with a sound defence and under-rated power. dropped eubank, stopped benn.
    love both fighters.

Yeah, I was afraid people would look at it that way. Wasn't the case at all.

It's more of a case of two could have beens, lost potential and all that. Watson achieved far more of his then Gerald, though, and absolutely dominated Benn.

Wouldn't say dominated. the fight was ultra-competitive until Benn ran out of steam ( due to watson's accurate and hard combo's and peek-a-boo style ,making Benn miss). But Watson did have a game plan which worked a treat. Great British fight . Very brave fighter Watson, if you can find the Mcallum fight he did lose clearly but was fearless ,beckoning the bodysnatcher in until the end and was only knocked out due to sheer exhaustion. I think maybe the seeds of the brain damage he later suffered were maybe planted in the punishment he took in the Mcallum and Benn fights.

I always rated Watson...I often wondered if hadnt run into McCallum he could have done a bit more.

But the division then had such great champions..Nunn and Jackson held titles around the time he challenged Mike I couldnt really see him doing any better there. But I think DeWitt had the WBO title and thats a fight he could have won.

Think he would have stood a very good chance against Jackson myself . He was very hard to hit and took Benn's bombs well. The uppercut from Eubank which finished him was a freak of a punch. Think he may have been too clever for Jackson myself .

He was only 25 when he fought Mcallum, not at his peak and he was improving all the time until his injury . He was well on his way to beating Eubank in the rematch .

Yeah maybe..Julian was probably already on the way down after the injuries he copped in the late 80's.

But if anyone is great at landing freak punches its this man...Watson had the tools potentially upset Jackson I do agree though.

I disagree. Watson was covering up so well that Benn wasn't affecting him with anything. Wearing Nigel down was part of the game plan, not a fluke.

he had watson hurt a few times. it was a pretty brutal fight. watched it again last week. watson maintains to this day benn was the hardest fighter he ever faced.

GMAN mid rounds KO, and Benn was a tad green and would have won the rematch with all due respect to Watson

Tough call, I might just take Watson. His shell defense, sharp jab, and strength would allow him to fare well anywhere in the ring, while landing much more consistently on the more defensively open and flawed McClellan, whether at close range or distance. If he decided to open up he'd be taking a real risk with G-Man's power, but I think he'd fight a smart fight as he did against Benn, and take him to beat G-Man on points.

Watson had a tremendous workrate and was aggressive at the best of times. When it came to determination, strength, etc, he was tough to beat. He covered up well with both gloves to block head shots rather than slip and slide. McCallum never found him hard to hit, while Benn was wasteful with his own punches and blew himself out. Benn certainly learned a lot from the Watson defeat.

Eubank found Watson hard to cope with, especially during their rematch. Watson was the constant aggressor throughout the fight with his workrate, wide variety of punches, and sheer strength.

I just feel Watson would walk onto something against McClellan. His defense was very good, but it wasn't based around sustained lateral movement and making his opponent miss altogether with slipping. The type of defense he implemented at the best of times only delays the inevitable.

    McClellan KO6.
