Hey pommy lads, just wondering how Nigel Benn is regarded by u guy's?

We have some footage being played on fox over here and it seems like he was pretty popular in the UK in his day.

Good power, and exciting to watch from what ive seen.

he is a bible basher now, but he was a boxing icon and still is.
have gloves will destroy was his early mantra, box puncher more as he got older and moved up.

he could draw a crowd anywhere in the uk .

his rivalry with eubank pushed up his status and recognition factor as well.

he had the huge advantage of having large parts of his career on free tv and was watched by millions and millions in the uk.

eubank v benn got 18,000,000 live tv audience.

or every man in the uk aged between 16 and 65 at the time to put it in perspective how popular boxing was and benn was.

Favourite fighter of all time. He had it all . Went through many phases in his career , starting with the Dark Destroyer days ,blasting people out in double quick time, getting beat by Watson, going to America for redemption and battering Dewitt and Barkley . Coming back home with the belt, losing to his nemesis Eubank, contemplating retirement before finding a new ,more boxing type style at SMW ,winning the title again on foreign soil. Fighting one of the most vicios MW's ever in Gerald Mclellan in a fight most thought he couldn't win and putting in what i think is THE finest and bravest performance by a British boxer in a legendary fight that would be shown far more often of it wasn't for what happened to Mclellan . Nigel was never the same after that, carried on for too long, lost to people he had no business losing to, finally retired and found life hard after boxing. Failed suicide attempt and alleged drug abuse before finding god and moving abroad where he is a preacher helping the poor.
This doesn't even begin to do him justice by the way.

Nigel Benn was a true boxing warrior, involved in many entertaining high calibre fights. He was the UK fans favourite in a time when Britain was blessed with a few world class middleweights/super middleweights. He would go to prove himself in the US, and will never be accused of ducking anyone. It will be a long long time before Britain will have rivalry that will match Benn/Eubank. When he fought he was front page & back page news, and even your granny will ask how he got on. Nigel Benn will always be my favourite fighter of all time.

Was really popular but always underrated. Shame he's turned into an irritating religious nut.

You'll find a hell of a lot of Brits who have him down as their favourite fighter ever

If you've not seen his fights you are in for a treat

I can't do him justice in words either, it's a long story, suffice to say he's a hero amongst British boxing fans

A complete and utter warrior. While I'm an admirer of boxing smarts and skill, I'll always have respect for fighters like Benn, Barkley, Gatti, Collins etc. The courage they displayed in many of their fights was awe-inspiring.

As for Benn being a preacher, who gives a ****? It's much better than being an alcoholic, a drug-abuser and a womaniser like he used to be.
