I agree. Part of the trouble is Hearns wants to another boxing match with Leonard. Sad but true, I saw it on ESPN classic when the two were commenting on other fighters. I'm not sure if you could get Hagler and Leonard int he same room. Duran used to be a real SOB, but I hear he has lost his jagged edge and mellowed some.
Im not sure he'd be "absolutely fine with him". I do think he'd tolerate him enough to do a get together though.
It would definitely be a different scenario, without doubt. I wouldn't doubt Hagler would be totally fine with him actually.
When Hagler was active he wasn't fine with his opponents according to Bob Arum, who said as soon as Hagler seen any od them around he was like "get them the hell out of here" Hearns, Duran, etc. He really hated his potential opponents and dismissed them at every opportunity. Thats Arum's take on Hagler. I do have an interview with Hagler and Sibson both talking to Reg Gutteridge after the Obel II fight about their scheduled match. I must admit that Hagler seemed pretty subdued and friendly in comparison to Arum's claims. Maybe with the cameras rolling Hagler changed.
I've seen that interview too - good interview..."Ill shake hands now Tony, but I won't shake hands at the fight" lol
Yeah, it's a good interview. The scene was set outside a resort or hotel. The sun was blazing and Hagler had his sunglasses on, also dressed smartly in a suit. He was ok with Sibbo.
It was in Italy...it was the day after Obel II (San Remo, I think). Sibbo had been commentating with Reggie. Sibbo was very respectful (like in the fight !)
Like Mendoza said, Hearns still wants to fight Leonard. On Leonard's ESPN Classic special, he said something like he talks to Duran and gets along with him, Hearns calls him to ask how much he weighs, and Haggler doesn't exactly send him Christmas cards.
Beating Leonard would have eased that. Actually, somewhere, i have Hagler's comments at the end of that SRL press conference and they were more sorry they couldn't fight than livid. Where did you hear he was livid?
Hearns still wanting to fight SRL isn't a hate thing tho. They could easily share the same room. Hell, get Benitez in there too, not like Foreman fought Holmes or Frazier.
To be fair, I read that too. I even think it was mentioned in Sorcery at Caesers. Hagler attended the big SRL event that most people thought was an announcement of a fight with Hagler. Instead it was a retirement, ego stroking bash that humiliated Hagler. I do think Hagler's resentment of Leonard goes beyond the split decision loss. Unlike Hagler (and Hearns and Duran), Leonard was the golden boy who got great purses from the get go, while Hagler got paid $50 for his debut and so on and so on. Let's say Hagler had got the decision:I think he could tolerate Leonard, but I still think he'd resent him quite a bit. Of couse though, the sour grapes don't help!
There's no doubt at all Ray called that big press conference and Marvin thought it was to announce a fight with him. That's deffo spot on. What i am questioning is how Marvin was about it. Maybe my memory has failed me, but i seem to recall Hagler (at that time, not years later) taking it like a man and talking sort of like, oh well he's gone now, it would have been good but now it's time to move on. One year i might categorise all these frigging mags I still want to find the one with the article stating Tunney brought a degree of new technique into boxing for Janitor :yep
respect to sugar ray, but ask people who their fave out of the four is and i bet most would say either hagler, hearns or duran. same thing today with mayweather.
