Do you think it is possible in todays boxing for a 20-year old to grab a belt in the HW division or is it one of those sports records than can never be broken?

At age 20? It's possible, but it will be difficult. You would have to resemble, and replicate Tyson in every way if not surpass him. I think if your American, that would help too. If your fighter out side of the states, your going to have hard time convincing the people in the states. Is it fair? No. But that's just the nature of the business.

Presumably people were asking the same thing when Patterson won it, same with Ali. Someone will come along no doubt but it's going to be a very tough record to beat. Tyson had the advantage of having pretty weak champions to beat too....that's not to say he only fought weak comp but the champions he beat to win the belts were weak, with the exception of Tucker who he beat to win the IBF if memory serves me right - he was a pretty good fighter.

Tysons rise was pretty quick too, think he turned pro in 1984 or 85 and within a couple of years was champion. There could be a kid out there right now developing who could tear the arse out of this **** division in 2 years time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed :good

Tyson turned pro march 1985 and became champion in November 1986. So that was a very fast rise.

Titlist at age 20, like Tyson? I doubt it.

Lineal champion at age 21-23? Maybe.

I'm racking my brains now to remember how quick Ali's rise was....think he won the gold in 1960 at light heavy, turned pro immediately after and was champ in 64, still only 22 years old.

Did anyone get the title quicker than Tyson after turning pro....the only one I can think of is maybe Leon Spinks :think

Could there be a titlist younger than Tyson in the future? Yes, if there was a time for the record to be broken, this would be the time.

The Youngest Lineal Champion is Floyd Patterson and that's the record that will be tough to beat.

Agreed. Look at the champions in the division today and they're far FAR worse than the ones Tyson had to beat. If I had an up and coming hard hitting prospect under my wing today I'd be heading straight for the WBA belt first, after tonights snooze-fest. The IBF and WBO would come next and then the WBC.

Probably not, Tyson was a prodigy. If you watch Tyson at the age of 18, he possessed the skills, speed, and power of a man in his mid to late 20's at the peak of his game. I cant think of any Heavyweight fighter off hand that was able to do what he did, even Ali wasnt as amazing to watch as Tyson IMO.

Now would indeed be the time to do it as the hw division is wide open (there are no clear contenders or a top10).

What's more mind boggling is that Tyson could have become champion way younger than he did. As a teenager, he was already beating up grownup pro's.
The documented fight between Tyson as a kid and Bruno as an adult serves as an example.
You probably could have put an 16 year old Tyson today in the ring with Valuev and gotten a new record.

But Tyson was a freak of nature (with his combination of speed, power and stamina). I don't think anyone like him will come up again.

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't it be impossible to beat? Didn't the lineal belt die with Lennox Lewis?
