I heard that iceman, but I cant recall him as an amateur. He seems to have poped up out of noway and landed in the Wildcard gym. I read he was sparring Manny and Khan. Im wondering if someone knows about his history in Ireland or did he start boxing when he left home???:huh

 

As far as i know he fought most of his career in Australia then disappeared for a while and the next thing i hear he is fighting with Roach

From what I've been told he was an okay amateur over here(in Ireland) but nothing special by any means.

I'm not sure how he ended up turning pro when he moved to Australia but he did and now he's got a good career for himself. 10-0 as a pro and being trained by Freddie Roach, he captured the Australian Light-Welterweight title when he was based there too. Winning it in just his 5th fight.

Could be a good prospect but at the moment is a mystery man to us in Ireland, most of us have never actually seen him fight either amateur or pro.

Long, long time since I posted - work has been a pain the hole, barely any time to get around to the sport I love. But a few days holidays away from the paper, so hear goes...

Card in Youghal, Cork on January 16. Promoted by two-time Olympian and Cork legend Kieran Joyce.

It features Irish welterweight champion Billy Walsh headlining, with Pa Walsh in support.
Also, Gary Hyde's three Cuban fighters will feature.
Gary is looking to step up the competition for heavyweight Mike Perez, so expect a longer test than one round.
From talking to Gary, it will be an opponent with a good winning record - someone that would be insulted at being named as an "opponent". I know heavyweights like the teak tough Adnan Serin and Dieter Roth have been considered.

Super-middle Luis Garcia gave Carl Froch a tough workout while sparring for his fight with Jean Pascal. Again, a Gary Hyde is looking for a fighter with a winning record. Sheffield's Jez Wilson, a fireman with a 5-0(4) record was asked but couldn't travel due to work commitments.


Mayo light-heavy Michael Sweeney will be fighting on the undercard of the Cristobal Cruz-Cyrille Thomas IBF featherweight title fight on February 14, in France, run by Banner Promotions. He will get a good bit of exposure on Canal +, and his manager Tommy Egan is negotiating television coverage for Michael here in Ireland for his fight.

Tommy Egan has signed an exclusive deal with Arthur Pelullo, president of Banner Promotions, for Irish talent to appear on Pelullo's shows for the next few years. I don't know exactly how long the deal is for, but I believe it runs well into the next decade.

I don't know if you remember, but Teddy Atlas punched a TV exec from ESPN last year 'cos he was complaining that all Pelullo's fighters were getting EPSN's coverage on Friday Night Fights. He practically has it all snapped up on ESPN.

This will be huge for aspiring fighters in Ireland - exposure on an American sports channel, on the hallowed Friday night slot.
Egan will be stepping up his recruitment campaign to sign Irish talent.
Quite simply, he told me, if an Irish fighter is talented, he will get on television in America. It did the trick for Bernard Dunne, John Duddy and Andy Lee, so why not a new generation? I'm very excited for the future of Irish boxing.

On our light-welterweight Dean Byrne, he has been going very well in the USA and Oz, but don't expect him to be back in Ireland anytime soon. Some sort of feud with an underworld figure back in Dublin, and serious enough to steer clear, by all accounts. A shame, he's been going well.

As far as I know, TV3 would still be interested - but it has to be right for Tommy Egan, after all he took it on the chin financially last time out.

He's very excited about the Banner Promotions link-up, is adamant that new stars can be created. We can look forward hopefully to Banner shows on over here, if television bigwigs go for it.

Michael Sweeney is slimmed down to light-heavy, he went to Philly with Egan a few weeks ago and Arthur Pelullo himself was very impressed, by all accounts. John Breen and Eamonn Magee will be getting him ready for the Valentines Day appearance on the Cruz-Thomas undercard.

As for Spike, he should be fighting in February/March in Massachussetts. I tell ya, he's as charasmatic and a hard hitter than anyone we have seen in recent times. I have a great feeling about him if he keeps fighting regularly.

Anyone know anything about Stephen Ormonde? My buddy was wetting his pants about him last time out in Killarney, said he made a superb debut, but just lacks a bit of power. Could he be a star for the future?

 

Ormonde impressed in Killarney, but he does not appear to have any fights arranged for the future. Phil Sutcliff who promoted the Killarney show promised regular shows, but has appeared go back on that idea. It appears many are interested in promoting, but once the enormity and difficulties or realities of promoting hit home, they have second thoughts.Promoting must be the worst job in boxing:yep
