Live or on film. This is not about resume or accomplishements, just how good they looked when you've watched them. For me, even though I'm no particular fan, it has to be Sugar Ray Leonard. Absolutely complete - technician/slickster, ring general, puncher, stalker. He had everything IMO. Yours?
I was going to make a thread about this particular topic. Been thinking about it, on and off, for a week actually. My criteria was it could be one or two performances from a fighter, and it tops everything else over a fighter you seen twenty times. Although it could be sustained brilliant performances over a period of time, etc. You did ask for a fighter, so I'll be back to give you one only.
Well, if you want to expand like above and name several that's alright as well. It all makes for good dicussion.
Best fighter ive seen in the flesh is Joe Calzaghe. On tape... Ray Leonard on his best day could beat Ray Robinson and Roy Jones on his best day beats any middleweight to light heavyweight in history... I dont care what any of you fellas think!:tong:bart
I left out Robinson because I feel I haven't seen his best, although what we do have to view is certainly enough to place him amongst the absolute best all-around fighters I've seen. I'd say he is the best offensive force I've ever seen. Also would like to say that I'm in the process of ordering Ezzard Charles' fight against Lloyd Marshall, the only fight of his at LHW available on film, and that could potentially be another choice.
Thomas Hearns. He would have beaten Sugar Ray if it had been over 12 rounds, was robbed in the rematch, and if he hadn't broke his right hand against Hagler, he would have took him out too! His utter destruction of Duran was incredible to watch...
Nah, I don't think Hearns would have knocked out Hagler regardless of whether or not his hand was broken.
A stoppage victory for Hagler was the only outcome from what i could see. Hearns probably had the ability to outbox Marvin but that wasnt his intention going into the fight so that makes what he 'could have' done irrelevent. With a good hand he couldve maybe gone onlonger, but fighting toe to toe with Hagler was only going to end one way as he'd never KO Marvin Hagler.
Marco Antonio Barrera vs Enrique Sanchez. ( 126lb, 2001/09/08 ) I've seen better fighters, but this was one of the greatest performances I think I've seen. He wasn't up against top tier of competition, but Sanchez was a good fighter who was completely dismantled in 6 lopsided rounds. Barrera was coming off his huge win over Naseem Hamed, and having transformed self into one of the best Boxer punchers in the game, he waited for Sanchez to make mistakes, and countered them with left uppercuts and straight right hands. Nearly every shot was hurting Sanchez, who was forced to quit on his stool having been knocked down twice, and wobbled three times. During this time, Barrera was the best at 126.
You could see the snap wasn't quite there in Tommy right hand after 90 secs of the fight. He still landed it though and Hagler did well to finish it before he was stopped for the cut.
I've narrowed my choices down to two fighters. If anyone is familiar with my taste in a fighter I'd like people to guess.
I'm assuming Duran is one of them. Leonard, Whitaker, maybe Hopkins or Hagler the other? That's my guess(es).
