I like Tunney by decision, his greater mobility would be the difference I feel ,plus his own power was underated ,he hit hard enough to keep Foster from getting careless, and Gene had a good chin.Foster was a great LH and possibly the best one shot banger that division has produced ,but he loses this one imo.
Tunney was one of the...if not THE smartest fighter ever.....Foster was one of the best LT.Heavy's ever...good fight...I'd take Tunney by decision...
BIG DEE HERE= Tunney by 5th rd ko as Foster couldn`t take the punch of a good heavyweight and Tunney was a vastly underrated puncher. Tunney would have been the best boxer that he would ever fight also. Tunney 5th rd KO.
Interesting points BIG DEE...do you think Tunney had a heavyweight punch comparable to Frazier or Ali? Seeing as though he only really campaigned at heavy in the last few years of his career and these guys were both dedicated career heavyweights.
BIG DEE HERE= Tunney KOed a rock chined Lt.Heavyweight- Heavyweight named Tommy Gibbons to end Gibbons career. The right hand that sent Gibbons to the canvas was a wicked shot to the head and it was the first time Tommy Gibbons was ever floored in his career. Tommy got up but was quickly finished off by Tunney and he also floored Jack Dempsey with one punch which was a right to the left cerebellum behind the ear dropping Dempsey to his knees in the ring. Dempsey took a far better shot than Foster ever did and so did Gibbons who was a ranked Heavyweight contender who went 15 rds with Dempsey. Foster would have gotten killed by Dempsey.
BIG DEE HERE= Ernie Terrell and Doug Jones both KOed Foster in Heavyweight fights and they weren`t big punchers. Tunney easily hit harder than both of them. Tunney also KOed Tom Heeney with one punch in his last fight in 1928.
Well, I wont add that Heenly fight, that fight was a tko. Tommy was still on his feet when the ref stop it. Now he did drop Heenly with one punch, but the bell saved him. I think that fight was stop 4 rounds too late.
Terrell was not much of a puncher, but Jones had a dangerous right and might have been in the same class as Tunney as a puncher. I like to Tunney to wear Foster down and knock him out late. Whom did Foster beat that Tunney would not be expected to? On the other hand, I don't see Foster beating Dempsey.
Tunney was one of only two men to ko Bartley Madden in 73 fights ,he could crack a bit with his quick right hand.
