Hopkins vs. Calzaghe: Punch By Punch

    Below you will find a comprehensive punch-by-punch accounting of the fight that took place between Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe earlier this year. These are the scoring punches. Here are some interesting aspects of what was found:


    - Calzaghe's best punch was the right hook to the head. He landed this punch to good effect at different points throughout the fight. His single best right hook came with 13 seconds remaining in the 3rd round. It was a very hard, fast, crashing shot. See if you can catch it. You'll need to watch at 1/8th or 1/16th speed.

    - Calzaghe has been accused with great regularity of "landing no punches" in this fight. Not true. He landed over 50 scoring shots. Now, granted most of these scoring punches had almost nothing on them. They were extremely light shots designed to make contact with the target, but were impressive in a way. Calzaghe showed great focus and determination in his body language and face as he touched Hopkins up with alot of these. When you slow it down you can see the boxer, and not the wild man that most fans went away believing they had witnessed.

    - Hopkins outscored Calzaghe by a fairly wide margin in terms of rounds, as well as total tally for all individual scoring punches landed overall. Hopkins of course also landed the significantly harder punches, so there were quite a few instances where they were exchanging and Calzaghe would land a glancing shot, and Hopkins would land and knock Calzaghe backward, redden his face with shock, and/or double him over from the force of his punches.

    Or maybe you can go watch Kessler-Mundine again...see what score you get this time. :shock:

    Now i know why hopkins faked the low blow, first i thought it was to get a point from joe, an get some rest because he was being swarmed an had no answer, were now i know it cause he punched his selfout, i hope wlad wrights that one down, that would help in couple of his fights

    I agree with San , on top of the punches that Calzaghe actually landed during the fight, I can only remember one straight left that he landed that actually seemed like a "real" punch.

    But judges cannot watch the fight in slow motion and see these things.. pure workrate and aggression CAN win fights, Honestly even during Pavlik v Taylor II, Pavlik did not land a whole heck of a lot of FLUSH shots , but his workrate and aggression helped him to win

    Where as Hopkins slipped and dodged and was barely touched .... only if hopkins would have been a bit more active... but during the fight, in his mind hes thinking how he has been hitting him, and has barely been touched by a flurry of slaps, thats why he was so made when he lost, and Calzaghe seemed scared shitless prior to the announcement of the scoring. There is a reason why Calzaghe all of the sudden no longer gives rematches

    Im not even a big Calzague fan but:patsch seriously this is a joke thread...its not because Joe slaps that it not landed...Maybe Hopkins landed the more telling blows but It was 3 or 4 slaps in return of 1 real punch ...in my book he outlanded him well enough to have the decision...man the guy was peppering him from all angles...i know mosquito bites but still hundred of mosquito bites :kolollllHopkins inactivity cost him the fight PLAIN AND SIMPLE...:deal
