We have a definitive thread of sorts discussing the overrated fighters on Eastside Boxing, and now we have the underrated to match. Discuss.

My picks to go into the list are as follows: Ricardo Lopez, Michael Carbajal, Johnny Tapia and Bernard Hopkins.

    Thoughts?

Oddly enough, I think at least 2 of the 4 you mentioned are overrated. Tapia on the other hand is quite underrated, not enough people take his full career and body of work into account, particularly his prime days at 115 when he was a hell of a fighter.

We're talking about ESB here, Sweet Pea. Michael Carbajal doesn't exist here, Ricardo Lopez is an obscure name in Boxing and I dare say not many members here have never seen his fights. Hopkins is the underdog in all of his fights recently and he has been performing brillantly in all of them; Trinidad, Wright, Tarver, Calzaghe, and most recently Pavlik. I'm talking about overrated on these forums, not in the Boxing community in general.

What you're saying is just untrue. Lopez gets talked about plenty on here without a bad word ever being spoken about him, moreso because of the lack of knowledge of the lower weights than anything, but if there's one fighter who does get all the accolades from the lower weights, it's Lopez. That's unfair IMO because there are plenty of other more accomplished, less talked about fighters from those weights, though obviously not 105 because it was a wasteland for talent outside of Lopez.

These forums (at their best) know more about boxing than most of the outside community IMO, and if there are any posts that do happen to bring up the lower weights (there are often in the Classic Forum), they're primarily concerning the above-mentioned fighters, with narry a mention of guys like Miguel Canto, Pascual Perez, Hilario Zapata, Yoko Gushiken, Jung-Koo Chang, Yuri Arbachakov, etc. etc. who were just as impressive and most of them more proven against top opposition. Those are a few of the underrated fighters, at least in the General Forum.

    Thanks for the insight.

I disagree, though. Ricardo Lopez is one of the greatest fighters of the last 20 years, and I dare say, not many members here have seen his fights.

Michael Carbajal was a great light-flyweight, who was a silver medalist, one half of the 1993 FOTY, and was one of the rare champions that retired on top.

Hopkins is only underrated in the sense that he is made to be an underdog in all of his last fights. He was underdog against Trinidad, Tarver, Wright, Calzaghe and Pavlik. He lost the fight to Calzaghe, but it was razor thin.

Johnny Tapia is underrated, he is mostly known for his loss to Barrera around these parts.

Who are your picks for top 10 underrated fighters on ESB, Pea?

Trinidad is very overrated. People say prime Trinidad would knock everybody out, but the fact is that good boxers like Winky Wright and Hopkins own him badly, even OScar DelaHoya, hell even Floyd Mayweather would decision him.

You are underrating Trinidad right there. As if he was a bum. The guy is 42-3 (35 KO's). No one here is saying that he is the best fighter ever, but why can't you give the guy his due credit? I don't think I am overrating him saying he was a good and exciting champion at 147-154. But you are UNDERRATING him by saying he was a bum and that he would be beat by "any good boxer".
