How can anyone call Morales shot in 2nd fight with Pac???

Watching the fight, Morales was looking sharp with his reflexes, had the energy, he was as explosive as ever, he could damn well pull the trigger catching Pac with some beautiful shots and he still had that great heart for throwing back punches. The difference between this fight and the last seems to be Pac's bodypunches and perhaps the fact that those punches would naturally do more damage than it did in the first. Pac has also shown that he has improved in each fight and the first one was close enough as it is.

You cannot honestly look at these rounds, and tell me this is the same bloated Erik Morales who fought Raheem at LW?

He wasnt prime but that is not a fighter you can call shot, no shot fighter can give Pac hell like that.

after this fight, noone was saying that Morales was shot. It was only after the 3rd fight and the loss to Diaz that people started saying that Morales was shot in the 2nd. Its terrible logic but its just how things work in boxing.

They called MAB shot too after Pac made him look shot first time...that is until MAB came back with some great wins including a win over Morales. And their 3rd fight didnt show anyone was shot either, shot fighters don't fight like that.

I think it is because Morales in particular had prided himself and fought with a lot of durability, even when he didn't need to, holding a height and reach advantage in most of his fights, but he was always willing to take a fight to the trenches, while showing bits and chunks of boxing brilliance.

Morales never was like Marco.. Morales fought the same way every time he went out and he never had to re-invent himself like Marco did. A fighter can only be durable and weight drained for so long before it catches up with them. It certainly isn't Pac's fault. Pac himself is a great fighter and he has continued to, not so much re-invent himself, but evolve. The Pac of today is very similar to the Pac of yesterday. Big difference is he actually has a good bit of skill to go along with relentlessness and handspeed. Honestly, early on in his career, all he did was throw the left cross over and over again.

 

There's a difference between shot and past prime. He was already starting to fade in the first fight but had one final great performance to give and gave it. By the time of the second fight those signs of slowing down had made themselves quite evident by the fight with Raheem. He still managed to go out gamely because Pac's style was not as big a deterrant as Raheem's was, but he was clearly out-done in an area he would've normally been at home with, and was unable to switch up his tactics and box. Pac had to do with that sure, but it's clear that Morales was on the downslope if you actually compare that footage with footage of a prime version. By the third fight he'd had enough of that kind of war and Pac was just too much for him, then again so would be most top 130-135 pounders by then.

 

In one sense, Morales was shot in that he lacked durability. As he aged, you could see him show pain and ease up. Where early on, and in his prime you would see him get angry and turn up the heat. Morales took the fight right to the kitchen.

First thing he lost was his durability, second thing he lost was his sharpness and reflexes.

Honestly, a very good Morales doesn't show pain, he just gets angry. Its not like the Morales that did show up wasn't capable of beating a good 90% of fighters out there, it just wasn't among his better showings, the whole package of what Morales was known to bring wasn't present.

 

kind of funny morales was leading the first 6 rounds in the second fight until pac stepped up his game and started to connect those hard shots and morales couldnt cope with it. my first time to hear a boxer for being god the first 6 rounds then suddenly became shot after the 6 rounds pacterons at best. and of course, they would go back to raheem as another excuse without knowing that raheem is a slick fighter and morales went to an unkown territory

he was not the morales that fought barrera in their first fight in the second fight with morales...but damn the guy was in shape and still a great fighter...pac was just too much

 

You're right. That's the way revisionist historians work. They don't want to give Pacman credit for anything. So now they're on their "he's never beaten anyone in his prime" schtick. No matter whom he beats going forward, they will either have really sucked but we just couldn't see it, or they were shot. That's the way haters think about fighters they don't like. Morales was still a top quality fighter in that second fight but Pacman had just risen to a higher level and didn't repeat the mistakes of the their first fight. Even if he ever outpoints PBF (and he should only agree to fight PBF at a catchweight under 144), they will say "well, PBF was coming off a long layoff."

 

Pacman just passed him by upgrading his performance. That night, he beats any Morales. Although an earlier Morales might have had to be KO'd cold before quitting.

 

MAB was not shot the first time around. I don't think he is even shot now. He is way past it but he does not look like a shot fighter.

EM was shot if not close to it the second fight.

 

I agree with pretty much most of this post. He was already starting to fade. I remember giving Raheem a solid chance to win that fight because Raheem was a slick boxer (and Erik Morales was cursed by the prefight HBO minidocumentary, but that's another story and my superstition ). He was just starting to slow down, and not really have as much energy as he used to. Definitely a case of ring age, not age.
