    Sadly not my misguided friend.

British football teams, even back in the day, were not made up exclusively of english players; so it was alright to support them. I supported Liverpool because there was a good Irish element in them at the time (Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan and also Steve Staunton came through into the first team).

With boxers it was different, because they are just individuals; my Dad and my Uncles were all big Barry McGuigan and Dave Boy McAuley fans, and they hated all the brit fighters (not just the English, but also some of the Welsh and Scottish ones). It was mainly due to the way the media in England would go over the top with the hype, and it really grated with my dad (he's also just biased against the English full stop); and of course being my father's son I followed suit to a large degree.

David Haye is actually the only British boxer I have ever totally backed.

If you had things different then thats your story; just don't go telling me I'm a liar, because you don't have a ****ing thing to back up your argument.

****ing shite d-mac, i know irish nationalists who support derby county, forrest, chelsea, west ham and millwall and theres no history of irish imput there. my father was a big fan of bruno, stracey, hope, boza edwards, bugner, cooper, minter etc etc. he has piles of old videos tapes and books on them fighters. if you were brougth up in a bigoted enviroment, well thats your concern but you are not typical of other irish boxing fans from a irish nationalist background.

explain. why is that a bad comparison. these football teams are british instituations. why would a bigoted irish nationalist not teach his son to hate those teams and yet teach him to hate british boxers.the mind boggles at such a stupid comment that d-mac made origionally.hes full of it

Look at what you are typing.

    (1) IRISH boxing fans.

    (2) IRISH nationalist background.

IRISH NATIONALISTS as a RULE do not like the Brits; this fact is pretty unrefutable I would say; even the most uneducated should be able to work that one out; do you even know the history of the troubles? Your Dad liked some of the good British boxers; thats good; shows he's a lot more open-minded than most; fair play to him. However, don't try and tell me this is the general mindset of Irish Nationalists from the north twenty and thirty years back; because that would mean that you are the one that is just talking ****ing shite.

im using the word irish because you decribed your self as being irish. what your problem is that you are mistaking political opinions with sporting opinions which is a completly different debate. for **** sake my uncle has followed liverpool all around europe. he paid £1000 for a ticket for a eoropean cup final in turkey, yet he is one of the fervent irish nationalist i know.you were talking balls, just admit it

you are talking through your arse man, not many irish nationalists support english football teams, you would never see kids wearing english football jerseys in the nationalist working class estates in the north, only celtic ones, wearing a man utd jersey in ardoyne in the 80's and 90's would have lead to a bad beat down

What your problem is that you are mistaking British football teams for entire British entities; they are not.

If you wanna talk about British sporting institutions then lets talk about the England national football team; what Irish nationalist is gonna sit down and watch a football match involving the England football team and not want to see them get beat; not many I'd say; what about you? Its just the ingrained mindset that we have over here.

Hence an English boxer should be more closely compared with the England national team than with an English club side; even more so nowadays: look at the numbers of foreign players, managers, coaching staff and owners of English clubs.

As an individual entity an English boxer represents England totally, while the England football team as a collective entity represents England totally. Club teams are not a good comparison, because things don't work that way with them.
