I'm not knocking him for it, but we all know Andy is a better fighter than he showed on that particular night. Since Vera lost to Kirkland, a Vera/Lee rematch would be a step backward for Andy. If Vera had gone on a mad tear and beat a couple repsectable guys, that would be a different story, but he lost his very next fight. Andy ought to set his sights on someone like the McGirt kid. If not another prospect, then maybe a McKart/Ornelas type fighter. Forget Brian Vera and wounded pride. In 2 years no one will remember him.
The next 6 months should look something like this, a contest in January against modest but not useless opposition,Vera in MSG st paddy day (lay that ghost to rest)and a crossroads with Mc Girt jnr in the summer. We would know by July if Lee will (as i believe) be a future world champ. I was impressed against Gibbs he picked his shots alot better, kept Gibbs at bay with the jab and tied him up inside when he had to.All the lessons he should have learnt with the Vera loss.
I like the idea of Andy Lee vs McGirt JR. Have each man fight a McKart or Ornales level fighter, and then assuming they win, have them face each other while Kirkland faces a top 10 guy. After that put the two guys who come out on top in a title eliminator. Although it may be a little soon for that, but after Pavlik/Abraham, what the hell else is left at 160.
### Lee is still able to make quite a lot of noise at middle weight. A loss is no shame at this stage of his career. He is still young enough to learn some new tricks. By the way Golovkin now fights in the paid ranks, too. Would be fun to watch Lee take on his old conqueror in the paid ranks!
Any chance of Andy getting a shot at Sturm? Probably the safest route to the top, and he may not be too terribley far from being able to beat Sturm.
Yep! I also think that Sturm is the weakest spot in the world title holders' ranks. Lee for sure has a good chance to beat STurm.
If he could beat Sturm, it would be a great way to position himself. Win the title, fight a maybe 2 good mandatories, and one real good voluntary defense, and then he would be in a position to challenge whoever comes out on top between Pavlik and Abraham. However, I think that in the long run he would be better off to wait KP and AA out. Take his time and use the WBA title to gain high level experience.
Hmmm.... Who is promoting him? I don't know if it is one of the WBA 'wallet' guys. I think Mundine is still in that path anyhow. You KNOW he was promised a shot to vacate for Kessler.
looked good against willie gibbs in his last outing!! i think they should throw him in with pavlik or abraham in late 09, you might think thats crazy but i think the kid's got skills and is an excellent boxer, could give them trouble!
i think Brian Peters is involved in promoting him! ( he's an irish guy you probably havent heard of!!)
Anytime in '09 is to soon. He'd get knocked out by Abraham. It would probably be a clean one shot KO without any long term physical damage, but it could really screw up his career. Pavlik on the other hand, due to his stalk ya, hurt ya, finish ya style, might completely ruin Andy. Remember! This is the guy who fell apart under Vera's pressure! Andy has potential, but he's along way from handling Pavlik. He needs 3-4 fights with some other top prospects, and a couple with good higher level gate keepers. That would put us into the middle of 2010.
they should try and get Howard Eastman to fight Andy next just to see how much more of a better job could Any do on him than John Duddy did, John took an awful lot of shots that night!!, but then again whats new!!
a fight against sturm by the end of 09 would be ideal, but it seems felix is protected so it might not happen
