Common sense post right there. :thumbsup I'd say Wlad is a top 20 all time HW at the moment & he can raise his stock quite significantly with continued wins complete unification & wins over top contenders, like he's been doing.
I don't understand how people can not put Wlad at least in the Top 50. Some people are trying to be funny I guess, but I would like to see someone justify there position as well as come up with a comprehensive list. Wlad is on pace for another 3 fights this year: Arreola in May, Povetkin in August, and possibly Dimitrenko in December. If Wlad gets by each one of these fighters impressively then he has cemented himself into the top 20 if he isn't there already. Those 3 are legit top 10 Hws in the world and are as difficult contenders you could have in any era of boxing. Wlad will have 14 title defences if this comes to fruition and he will also have a 55-3 record which is AMAZING for being HW Champion for 6 years. His winning % and his KO % are one of the best.
Who said Wladimir was in his prime when he was KO'd? For that matter Lennox Lewis was KO'd by McCall & Rahman and where do those fighters rank all time?
There are many great HWs, over the years, who have been sparked in the ring. Fighting at this weight, with many huge punchers (who may not necessarily be great fighters) who can KO almost anyone, can make the best boxers look bad, if their concentration lapses for a few seconds. Just ask Lennox.
True.............and for the record, I don't view Rahman or McCall being any more dangerous than Sanders and Brewster. All are lights out punchers. However, the Ross Purrity lwin is pretty shocking against such a great and dominant fighter.
Wlad is currently in my top 30, and I do believe he will be ranked in the top 20 before his career is over. While he has alot of things going for him, he also has his drawbacks, losses over average opposition in Brewster, Sanders, and Purrity, which were all TKO's, as well as having one of the weakest chins seen in a Heavyweight champ in many years, he also is fighting in what people think is the worst era for Heavyweights of all-time. All in all, I feel history will remember Wlad as the best of the worst, a great puncher, with one of the best Jabs ever seen, but will also be looked down upon for fighting scared at times and for having very suspect chin.
Much depends on the criteria of an ATG heavy list. Are you looking for head to head who beats who the most format? If so, Wlad should be top 20! Are you looking for a statistical comparison and ranking amongst greats in terms of winning%, KO%, Title record in title fights, etc... Is so, Wlad might be top 10! Are you looking for over all historical impact on the sport? In North America Wlad might not rate high here, but in terms of Europe hes a giant here.
It isn't shocking if you really take a look at the loss itself. Horrible management. Wlad was only 22 years old, and it was Wlad's 25th fight in a 2 year span. It was his 6th fight in 6 months, Wlad has just fought 3 weeks prior in Germany. Wlad had NEVER been past 8 rounds, and his management scheduled the bout for a 12 rounder. Wlad was actually sick during leading into the fight, and only weighed in at 225 pounds. His promotional company had him running around town promoting the fight, instead of training, and preparing for Ross, like he should have been. They stage the fight in his hometown of Kiev, and Wlad was throwing everything but the kitchen sink... clearly showing that he had not studied tapes on the iron chinned Puritty. Wlad completely boxed his ears off through the first 9 rounds, and began to completely unravel in the 10th. You could tell that he had absolutely nothing left in the tank. He was slipping all over the place, and his corner finally stopped the fight in the 11th round while Wlad was eating punch after punch (staying on his feet)... he was just too exhausted to defend himself. Wlad actually cussed when Fritz jumped in to stop the fight as he wanted to just finish it out. That is what I would call a learning experience. Considering that was 10 years ago and Wlad is now in his prime, I don't see why the loss is even an issue. He clearly doesn't have a stamina problem now.
