I havent seen mention of .. Georgie Barnes and his dad, who boxed around the world under the name of Frankie Burns Les Darcy, or his brother Frank 'frosty' Darcy... a topline Oz lightweight, on his way to National honours before dying at the age of 20-ish. Bobby Murdock and Paul Murdock... Bobby was a tough MW/LHW sth paw in the 70s.... Paul faught the WBA championship... Jack Russell, and his old man... Peter Smith....Jack claimed a few titles... Leo young Snr and Jnr... both national champs.... Leo jnr claiming the Commonwealth Jnr Middle crown. Grahame Brook, I believe is Lionel Roses nephew????? Any one know for sure?? Bob Greenshields.... Aust lightweight Champ.... 1907, or 1909?? had a very handy brother with minimal fistic impact in the record books. Regardless, Bob Greenshields beat the life out of Bob Whitelaw, the first man to put a mark on Darcy's record. Ambrose Palmer had a handy brother.. Harry?? Jack?? Not sure what name.. Fred Henneberry had a handy brother I believe.. Paul and Alan Moore were fantastic... both National champs... I need to get the record books etc. from storage... will be able to list an impressive tally. This country always had some greater depths than the settled water we see on top...
Re: Dan and Ned.... Im sure you all know Ned was a handy fighter. Claiming the H/W title of northern Vic. (bare knuckle.. after belting his mate, 'Wild' Wright). Legend has it, he offered Jem Mace a view of his own talents, whilst both were at the Abe Hicken/Larry Foley fight near Echuca. If Ces Waters needed a contencious wife, perhaps Ellen Kelly, Mother of Ned, would have been suitable. A very hard old lady she appears to be... yet, a heart bigger than Viatli Bros. and Lewis collectively.
Jackie and Teddy Green were the first set of brothers in Australian boxing history to both win Australian titles. The Sands brothers only had two of the boys that won official titles, Russel and Dave. Alfies title win was only recognised by the Leichardt stadium promoters. Janssen brothers were the first set of brothers to hold Australian titles simultaneously. According to the Australian Almanac the first 7 sets of brothers to win undisputed Australin titles were in order. Green brothers Sands .... Gatterellari ..... Ropis ...... Mulholland..... Janssen ... Waters .... Some of the Australian titles listed in Boxrec were disputed as there was an official champion.
ROY THURGAR SNR and ROY THURGAR JNR, SNR died in ring when he fought CLEM SANDS AND JNR was N.S.W LIGHT-HEAVY CHAMPION before he became a gangster an was blown away by a hitman in randwick.
Pete Smith (Jack Russell, Lightweight ) is my brother. Brian Smith is my father (featherweight ). Both passionate fighters. If you want any further info about them, let me know.
I remember Jack from a few years ago. Was a small guy (fly?). Didn't have a lot of fights. But fought for, and won, a few titles. Travelled overseas and might have even challenged for a world title? Perhaps you could fill in some gaps Lisa?
Excuse the wrong use of your Fathers name Lisa. I've met both 'Brian' and Jack of the years.. A detailed run down on your dads career would be appreciated.
Cheers mate. Happy new year also. Just a point of interset, and I guess the reason for his name.... Fortunato does mean Lucky, in English..
Thornberrys were one of Australias sucssess storys . Trevor 13w 4 L fought for comonwealth Rick 25w 5L held heaps of titles and fought ,Calzaghe,Ottke,Mundine,Wharton . Noel 8w 3L Qld Champ .
I can think of two sets of Brisbane brothers who fought in the 50's & 60's. Clive Stewart [middle] 64-13-2 & Merv Stewart [welter] 22-21-3 Feather weights Wally taylor [21-5-1] & Ollie Taylor [11-2-1] Both were very good amateurs. Ollie won a bronze medal in Rome. His last pro fight was a 15 rd points loss to johnnie Famechon for the Aust. feather title. Wally fought the classy American negro Auburn Copeland 3 times. Clive Stewart would have been a big test for any of the middles going around in Aus. now.
Regarding Clive Stewart.. he always reminded me of jeff harding.. Only through facial appearance.. a great fighter.
