It's a very simple concept and it's mentioned all the time:

Unless there becomes a way to ascertain ONE champion in each weight class, boxing will never be truly poplular. Imagine if there 3 or 4 different baseball championships and teams just randomly entered random tournaments based on shady placements.

The only other way boxing could become popular would be if a personality like Mike Tyson came along. But when he leaves, popularity goes down again.

Boxing needs to revamp itself in the same model as tennis under the ATP. Points, Rankings, Major and minor tournaments, purses by tournament placement.

One champion is a great idea but I can't see it happening. We also need some new superstars and some mega fights - real pick em's!

It would be a nice start, but by no means would that alone get boxing back in the mainstream. Boxing needs to reorganize itself from the top down if it wants to get back to where it used to be.

If you only have one title there doesn't need to be champ vs champ matches - every title fight will be meaningful.....

Rather than guys racking up endless, meaningless defences hiding behind a title rather than fighting the best.

    No more contractual rematches.

Back in the days when we only had the WBC and WBA unification fights were huge. Recently on ESPN and Verses I've seen tomato cans with 15 losses to other tomato cans walk to the ring with some big shiny title belt. All the titles and all the sanctioning bodies definitely hurts boxing.

Poor match making hurts boxing. Prospects should fight other prospects, not Anthony Ivory and Grady Brewer!

Promoters need to learn to promote. When's the last time you saw a top fighter on Leno or Letterman?

One thing that would be very helpful would be for ESPN and Verses to increase their boxing budgets. I think it would pay off. What if we saw fights the quality of Adamek/Cunningham on free TV weekly? There's no doubt that would give boxing a serious shot in the arm.

It's not as great as it sounds. Under one sanctioning body it would take fighters forever to climb up the standings. A lot of guys would never get a shot. Having 3 or 4 world titles and a unification options to become super champ works similar anyway.

It would also help if the guys started fighting more often.

Definately get rid of the Warren Boxing Organisation belt and also the IBF because all they do is make shitty mandotories.

Boxing is doing just fine. It migrated out of US and it's doing great overseas.

If you want it to be popular in the states again just produce more talent (read: take game consoles away from kids). Simple really.

boxing doesn't need one champion at each weight (although we'd all love to see it) because the man on the street doesn't know any better anyway.

boxing needs a standout heavyweight champion with flair because even the parttime fan knows lennox lewis and mike tyson.

Spot on that might happen if haye beats vitali. I mean an heavyweight who can throw bombs and also his likely to subside if one of vitalis get through.

American children play less dangerous sports now. It has nothing to do with videogames. Do you live in America?
