So I was watching the Whittaker vs McGirt fights from '93 and '94 yesterday. It occured to me while watching, that there is a natural comparison to be made between Sweet Pea and Pretty Boy. Both possess excellent defence of course, both employ twisting upper body movement and that "rolling shoulder" move. Both tend to enjoy potshotting rather than throwing lots of combinations. (although I think Pernell threw more combos in these fights than he usually did).

I guess what I'm asking you guys, is for your opinion on this subject. How are the two fighters simliar? How are they different? And if your feeling ambitious...who would win between the two at 135?

I would go for Mayweather by UD.

Whitaker was excellent, better than Mayweather - but wasn't 'judge friendly'. Floyd, whilst being a defensive genius, was more attacking naturally than Whitaker at the lower weights, only becoming especially defensive from 147.

Floyd is much more subtle with his manoevres, using rolls and blocking shots, whilst Whitaker relied on reflexes.

Well, like I said it came to me last night as I was watching Pea fight...I think it could make for interesting discussion, I'm hoping it doesn't turn into PBF lovers vs haters....but that may be too much to ask

I, too, would love to see this matchup

I would have to go with Mayweather...he has the edge in hand speed and accuracy..Whitaker had a great jab and great defense but his offense is limited compared to Floyd's. Great fight though

    - Mayweather looks more athletic to me.

    - Whittaker also used to go backwards a lot, with Mayweather using lateral movement more.

In a interview with Smitty, you know that guy that does the interviews with the top boxers and discusses their methods, Mayweather says his idols are Pernel Whittaker and Aaron Pryer.

Whitaker had a much superior jab, that was not just better in general but a weapon he used much more often.

Was better at fighting off the back foot.

Had a higher workrate in the majority of his bouts than Floyd did in his.

Was more focused at going to the body.

Mayweather was faster of both hand and foot.

A harder puncher as well, although Slightly.

As for a match-up, I'd favor Whitaker at any weight. A competitive, and highly tactical fight, but Whitaker wins.

His southpaw stance and brilliant jab are going to give Floyd a lot of problems. A busier workrate will help him as well, and Pea typically started out with his game from the begining. Mayweather took time to adjust to his foe, he'd lose most of the early rounds because of this, and if he was able to even up the action later on, it wouldn't be enough to come out on top.

I agree, but I think Floyd was slightly better off of the back foot. B/c he could knock you out/down off the back foot and was more dangerous.

More naturally attacking? When was Mayweather throwing 100+ punches per round and 1,000+ per fight? When was Mayweather setting Compubox records for punches thrown?

    :rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

I suppose he had a better jab as well? Was he a better southpaw, too?

Whitaker's defence was even more reflex based.

Whitaker had a higher output, by far.

Whitaker had a better jab, a consistent jab.

Whitaker was a faster starter and didn't "figure" guys out.

    Whitaker clowned more.

    Speed around equal.

    Power Mayweather.
