He wouldn't beat Valuev. People are overreacting and not considering styles. Toney can not move. He is like a beached whale. At least Holyfield had some legs. Valuev would easily get into range and go to work on Toney.

 

Holyfield had some legs....Toney KOD Holyfield when Holy was 5 years younger.

Toney does not need legs, he just needs to move his head to make the slow and predictable Valuev miss.

It's not only about making your opponent miss, but making him pay as well and in order to do that Toney has to get in range, which means that he would have to use his legs. In most of his recent fights he has been very lethargic and was often off balance when trying to counter.
The James Toney we have seen against Holy is long gone. This version of him would probably embarass Valuev and have some target practice against the russian giant. He looked ok against Rahman in their rematch, but that fight was stopped after three rounds and Toney wasn't doing that much during that time, except for the third round.

 

I still think a lot of Toney's problem has to do with conditioning. He came in lighter and looked better against Rahman in the rematch. Yeah, it was only 3 rounds, and Toney didn't do much for the first couple, but by the third, he was tagging Rahman and really did shake him up.

Toney is inconsistent, typically grossly overweight, and 40. While he's not anywhere near where he was, he still has more skill in his pinky than just about every heavyweight out there. Toney still has an unbelievably chin, tremendous skill, and a toughness that cannot be taught.

However, it is obvious that there is NO WAY he can carry 230lbs.+ without suffering the consequences. He needs to rematch Oquendo, come in at 210-215, school him, and then fight Valuev. That's his way to a belt.

Valuev WILL NOT beat a trimmed down Toney. Toney is far too fast, resourceful, and defensively skilled to be beaten by that tree trunk with arms...

toney has always been a favorite fighter of mine but he is obviously delusional now. he would not win one round against wlad or vitali and even with his defensive style he could not avoid being stopped for the first time against them either.

I disagree...... I was shocked at how off target Nick Valustiff was with his long jab... BUT! I then decided, after further review of the tape, that Holy's good lateral movement at age 46 was the cause of Valustiffs' jab being off the mark.... Had Holy been stationary, Nick Valustiff would've landed it over and over again.... Holy fought in a manner to be out of punching range.... Thus, Holy himself had trouble getting off with his own punches, but he did do better at it than Nick Valustiff.... Holy won the sparring match in Switzerland..... I felt he did anyway.....

James Toney really has no fancy footwork these days..... Head movement would not be enough to offset Nick Valustiffs' jab.... Toney would need speed and plenty of upper body and head movment, as well.... At age 40, Jim Toney is still cagey and ring savy in there, however, he is also clearly fading.... In 2009, I really can't see Jim Toney beating anybody up in the top-5 at heavyweight...... Fresno Oquendo is / was top-20 material at best here in 2008.... I felt Toney won by a hair, but he clearly struggled....
