ARGUELLO. CHAVEZ. HAGLER. Who was the most impressive/effective in their prime?

I am trying to build up my collection of the best 70s and 80s fighters, and I got a dvd with Arguello-Mancini, Chavez-Rosario and Hagler-Antuofermo II on it recently.

These are three pretty special fighters in their prime, I'm sure you will all agree.

But 'h2h', who was the most effective and/or impressive fighter in their prime??

    Please vote and explain :bbb

This is incredibly hard for me to choose, all 3 are on the same tier IMO & I personally rank ALL 3 as top 15-20 p4pers.

I voted Chavez, the run he went on (87-0) was nothing short of miraculous & he had very few close ones among those to boot.

Hagler possibly had an edge over the other 2 on basic outside skills with his switch hitting & stuff, Arguello had the textbook stand-up style & was the single better puncher of the 3 but I just loved Chavez in his prime, difficult to catch clean, chin of iron when he did get caught, body puncher supreme, the will of a deranged lion - just see the 1st Taylor fight for proof - & could box you from the outside as he did when vs his good friend Ramirez.

I prefer Chavez win over Rosario to any of Marv or Alexis wins in their prime but certainly Im not gonna argue with someone that ranks either Hagler or Arguello higher.

My vote is Chavez... please dont ask me to split the other 2 tho.

Razor tight, I know more about Hagler and Arguello's style than I do Chavez's tbh.

Its a hard question to answer because when they were all very impressive and effective in their primes, cut from the same cloth as it were. If you were to push me id say Hagler, simply because if you are looking to increase your set of fights you can get them in good quality and with English speaking commentators.

i bought a career set for Arguello a few months back and although I have all his televised fights, I find Spanish and Japanese commentating more of a distraction than English, just a personal preference. Alexis is still great to watch.

When I saw those three names, I thought to myself, what the hell is the difference? They are all top 15-25 fighters of all time or better.

In the end, I'll pick Arguello based on him being the best 130 lber of all time and fighting at the highest level at 126, 135 and 140 as well.

Tough but I'll go with the Marvelous One - incredibly diverse skill set, won all his biggest fights (save the Leonard fight), and possessed an impenetrable will. Chavez is a close second though - the win streak was godly and he epitomized the style and mentality of Mexican fighters.

I voted Chavez, I think his win streak was a bit more impressive, and the quality of opposition was a little better.

Hagler. As far as i am concerned, his draw with vito antifermo was one of the most crooked decisions in boxing and i am one of the many who feel he beat sugar ray. He was a superb athlete who loved a tear up and excited the fans. Hagler=Legend. Chavez was a close second tho.

hagler for me. out of those 3, i think he was the most impressive to watch. the guy was a machine when he fought. the guy could walk through punches and steam roll foes at his very best. i love how he precisely destroys the opposition from the opening bell as he did with sibson. the guy could wear you down with punches, and dictating the pace. i think his jab was fantastic. a constant piston like punch that could erase someones face off, great activity as well. he was very adept at fighting orthodox, which threw opponents off. the guy was also a great athlete with supreme dedication.

arguello is next for me. slow starter with moderate hand speed at best, but when he started to find a groove and opened up i liked how he put punches together. quite an underrated body puncher as it was'nt his forte, but he was very capable in this area.

I voted for Arguello, but I'm not going to debate anyone who voted differently. It's very hard to choose. And, Alexis was not at his peak against Mancinni. Watch the Escalera fights, and you'll see that Arguello had already lost half a step by that time. Pryor fought a relatviely faded version of Alexis.

I rate Arguello a tad higher in a P4P list as of now for his work at multiple weights, but as to the question, I think Hagler was a more skilled and versatile fighter than either Chavez or Arguello, who, while both greats, had their stylistic flaws. Hagler at his best didn't really IMO, though others will try to tell you otherwise. I think he was a more versatile and effective stylist as well.

How about a 3 way tie? This is extremely difficult. I"ll go with Hagler cause he's a bad mutha ****a. Na I'll go with Chavez tough as nails, longevity. I'll also take Arguello watching him punch was a thing of beauty.
