In a BIDNESS sense, YES, Bowe was very controlled by Newman and Eddie Futch..... But, that was only early on.... By 1996, Bowe had millions and was gettin' lazy in training.... Bowe's off the field antics began to surface, and it showed in his game on the field..... Thel Torrance trained Bowe for his rematch with Andy Golota.....

Exactly. Most of what gets repeated as "fact" about this incident is little more than Lewis camp propaganda, which tries to tell us that Bowe was somehow "afraid" of fighting Lewis (how the propagandists got inside Bowe's mind, I'll never figure out), when the obvious reason was the same reason why most fights don't happen, or happen too late, etc. - financial. Bowe and Newman could make more money fighting a tune-up against Dokes, then taking on Ray Mercer (which was the plan until he blew it against Fergusson), and then a Holyfield rematch.

Both the Mercer and Holyfield fights were big moneymaking fights at the time, and AT THE TIME, each was viewed as every bit as worthwhile - and quite likely more lucrative in the U.S. - opponents than Lewis. Lewis was nowhere near as well-known or respected AT THE TIME as he eventually became, and Newman most likely wanted to give time for that fight to build into an even bigger attraction than the Mercer and Holyfield fights. This sort of thing is done in boxing all the time.

From a boxing business standpoint, it was a reasonable strategy. I might add too, that Bowe was all set to fight Lewis in '95 for the WBC title, but Lewis went and got himself knocked out by McCall, scuttling that. Sort of puts the lie to the "Bowe was scared" silliness, doesn't it?

Just what exactly dose Bowe have to do before people will acknowledge that he ducked Lewis?

If he signed a confesion I get the idea that some people here would say that he did it to promote a future fight.

I do NOT buy the notion of Bowe dumping the WBC belt into the trash can his (Bowe's) honest gut feeling and decision.... Rock Newman schemed up that idea and Bowe went along with it.... It was publicity and bold.... Newman was NOT gonna let the WBC or any other group dictate to him and tell him how is was gonna manage Riddick Bowe....

And Bowe took no crumb of comfort from the fact that he would not have to defend his title against the man who knocked him out to win the olympic gold medal?

In fact he was outraged that he was being denied a high profile chance for revenge by his manager, but he chose to go along with it for financial reasons.

Not just go along with it, but go though the media circus of throwing the belt in the bin?

I have zero sympathy with Bowe here.

Just a minor point, I am no fan of what Bowe and his management did in 92/93, but Lewis did not KO Bowe; he caught him with a couple of decent punches, and adding up the punishment Bowe also took in his Semi, the ref wisely stopped the bout.

But Bowe was never off his feet in the bout, indeed if it were a pro bout, he would have been deemed merely stunned......

Well, Bowe did get some comfort and satisfaction by kayoing Jorge L. Gonzalez on HBO in 1995..... I still review that slaughter every now and then when my bud's and I are smashed / hammered.... Gonzalez was just a hulking cluster **** of a fighter..... Little to no skill at all.... Cheers....

9423 posts still don't account much............

Maybe the facts have not hit good ol' Britain but Lemmie dumped the belts because Ruiz/Byrd were not "worth" it and persuing the totally washed up Tyson impersonater or Roy Glass were much, much more "worthy" challengers to cement his legacy.

While I am at it, VK was not "worth" a rematch either . Unfortunatly Lemmie could not recycle another old shell of a shell and would have been faced with a formidable challenger in the Russian so he pulled tail and let completely unbiased Lewis Biographers like yourself propaganda his greatness.
