Would Calzaghe have destroyed Nigel Benn just like he did Eubanks if they fought?

Benn's punch output would be enought to keep up with Calzaghe and his power would me more than enought to stop him. A young Eubank COULD beat him but he wasn't busy enough at times.

 

You need to get the fight. He had a good opening and won the the first three out of four. That was it. He did prove he could walk into the same punch over and over again. The fight should have been a draw or a slight nod to Eubank on effective punching. Joe landed rather little of consequence in the aggregate. He was actually hurt in the final seconds and holding. Turn off the crowd noise and commentators and you might see it could have been called as a 7-5 win for Eubank.

Calzaghe would have won a clear decision over Benn, it would have been a tough fight but Calzaghe has too many good boxing traits to let a straight forward fighter like Benn beat him.

B The version Calzaghe fought was a pale shade of what Eubanks was. That version of Eubanks wasn't even rated as a top ten fighter any more.

There's a quote somewhere around the time of the Kessler fight where Calzaghe states he couldn't talk or move for days as Eubank took him in the trenches somewhere Kessler had never been.

as for benn, calzaghe just has too much nous for someone like benn who will steam forward looking for a fight. calzaghe takes care of fighters like benn all day long.

Calzaghe would have an easy time with Benn imo, style wise he poses no problems, he is aggressive with a weak defence and although tough, did have a questionable chin. I think joe counters him all night long and late tko would not surprise me.

prime benn v calzaghe would have been a very good fight, very entertaining as well.

i watched eubank all through his career, and long before he became champ.
i saw his rise, i saw his fall.

the eubank that showed up to fight calzaghe, despite the late notice would have beaten the prime eubank 8 times out of 10 because he concentrated/threw a lot of leather and treated it seriously all the way through.

prime eubank in most fights where he new he was the better fighter coasted and just did enough to win, never exerting himself and getting the most out of himself.

in the calzaghe fight , calzaghe made eubank fight all out every round and eubank , had the stamina and will to try to match him.

it was a tough hard fight for both men.

22 pro fights is a fair amount of fights.... he had a extensive amateur back ground as well...

Haye is challenging Vit for a HW title in the same amount of time, Floyd had made 5 defences by then.... Oscar 9.... etc etc...


I suppose he was still green on the world stage... though Eubank was not longer a world stage boxer....

 

all fighters mature differently and are handled differently by their management teams. kelly pavlik had to wait 30+ fights before he got a world title shot, david haye was fighting carl thompson in his eleventh pro bout. it's a pointless comparison.

 

Prime Benn, and Eubank are both tough fights for Calzaghe, imo. It annoys me when people say they aren't because apart from perhaps a 43 year old recently twice beaten Hopkins, Calzaghe has never beaten anyone as good, or proven, as either a prime Benn or Eubank imo.
