British fighters who underachieved/wasted their talent?

he became flyweight champ at a young age and had the potential to become one of the greatest flyweights ever but couldnt turn down a wee dram and ended up a drunk dieing a lonely death

IMO he could have become greatest british fighter ever

 

I think Joe Bugner was about as good a fighter as a pacifist can be.

he was a great fighter but your right his achievements in the ring did not warrant a place in the HOF,it's alot to do with what he symbolised here, his impact on the people of ireland was magnificent at a time when we were desperate for something to bring us together.

eastman,what a lazy ****, what a talent he was, really entertaining to watch when he wanted to fight and without doubt should have held a strap at mw.

dave 'boy' mccauley i think underacheived a hell of a lot, he should have done so much more with his career based on his talent.

 

warren brought up a protege welterweight called george boy collins.
on tv every fight got to 36-0 then warren stepped him up to british level and lost both times and retired.

warren must have earnt a lot of money from a southern area fighter.

used to have georgie smith as well, a white boy with an afro, again stellar record but faded quick.

herol graham was a sad case.

he was a great light middle but no champ would go anywhere near him , and then he had to move up in weight and start from scratch all over again.

naz despite what he acheived as a feathweight , should have stayed at bantam, where his size was best suited for.

naz at bantam /was cut /in shape and fighting people his own size .

at feather he never trained hard/got soft and lost.

might have happened at bantam as well, his brothers shortned his career , driving a wedge between him and ingle.

 

greengloves is right about mccauley, forgot about him.

a very tall flyweight with dynamite power, who chose to fight in the trenches negating his assets and letting his opponents land more shots than they should.

barnstorming fighter though.

 

I remember George Collins and his brother Tony. George had to petition the BBBofC to turn pro before he was 18 because he was supposedly THAT good. I think he was retired by the time he was 24 after getting stopped by Kirkland Laing and someone else who I can't recall. Not really a waste of talent though, more a protected hype-job.

 

Errol Christie. Remember thinking he had what it took to go all the way.

 

gary jacobs in a good fight was the other fighter he lost to in a british title fight.

Frank Bruno springs to mind, if he'd have had that killer instinct in his biggest fights he could've been a British ATG.

Also, Eubank and to a lesser extent Benn.
