Has Riddick Bowe ever commented on his ducking of lewis

you obviously missed the clip where pryor gets in leonards face only for leonard to have pryor ushered off the stage ..

 

What has that got to do with anything? Pryor could not be a viable opponent until after the Arguello fight when he made a mainstream name for himself. By then Leonard had retired.

 

leonard and floyd got alot in common .. they dont fight people unless they make a 'name' for themselves... where the **** red rooster at we need some truth about this scum bag

Exactly. For some reason some people in here seem to think just because some Wally calls someone out they have ducked said Wally if they don't fight them. What a crock of shyte. As if Leonard would have been scared of a smaller man with the technical deficiencies of Pryor. His biggest assets would have flattened out vs the bigger, more powerful, technically better and faster Leonard. Pryor didn't have the technical gifts of the Duran that got the better of the willingly flat footed Leonard. Even if he got him to fight Pryor would be no-where near as hard to hit as Duran was.

 

People act as if MOST OF THE GREAT CHAMPIONS, had they been in Bowe's (newman's) position, coming off that particular win over Holyfield, WOULD HAVE immediately faced Lewis as first challenger !

Truth is, ALMOST NONE of them, if any at all, would have jumped straight from a 12-round career-best epic championship winning performance over a previously undefeated champ into a fight with another undefeated challenger who had just crushed the other leading contender (Ruddock) with an awesome and "easy" 2 round KO.

People can whine all they want about "ducking" (yes, it happened, I dont deny) and how Bowe and Newman renege on previous arrangements, but most of the great champions would have done the same thing and found a way not to make Lewis the immdiate challenger.

 

I can see that.
But that's ignoring the big issue - Bowe only got to fight Holyfield in the first place because of the contractual agreement to fight the Lewis-Ruddock winner.

It was meant to be Holyfield-Ruddock for a while until this four-man mini tournament idea came up.

It's not like someone like, say, Frazier beating Ali and then taking a couple of easy touches. I can understand that. This was a direct case where you only get that title shot with a certain agreement, an agreement that Newman then gleefully ignored.

No agreement, no Holyfield, no night of glory for Bowe. Holyfield fights Ruddock instead, Lewis and Bowe kick their heels on the sidelines again angling for the winner, that is if that winner doesn't decide to get in an easy touch defence first.

Newman had the nerve to act all bewildered and angry when the boxing orgs froze him out after Bowe was no longer champ...Newman made that bed, he just never thought he'd have to lie in it.

 

When Bowe was beltless, and Lewis was not, did team Lewis give Bowe a shot?

This could be a case of the man with the belt wanted NO part of the other.

 

Was Bowe ever contracted to fight Lewis?

 

The word 'ducking' gets used far too often IMO. Managers, promoters, and boxing politics in general can cause a fight not coming off.

I do believe Bowe wanted no part of Lewis, even though be done a big "shout out" through KO magazine during the early 90's.

 

What during the time that Bowe was kidnapping his wife and lasting only a week in marine boot camp ?

I don't think Bowe ducked Lewis similar to how I HIGHLY doubt Lewis "ducked" Ruiz.

It's just another one of the millions of fights that got crumpled in the political machine that is Boxing. Should've happened but didn't...shitty but true.

 

Bowes life went off the rails for a time, I don't think he really wanted Lewis but no one did, who remembers Tyson paying step aside money (wish I could have had some of this), so at this time Bowe wasn't fighting anyone for any reason.
