I came across this while searching for some info on whatever happened to Clay-Bey ( I was watching the Lewis Tua under card). I figured some of you might enjoy this amateur contest between Wlad and Clay-Bey. I hate the Olympic scoring system, but this fight has it's moments. thanks i haven't seen that one yet. this was a tougher fight for wlad than most of his pro fights. very close bout: klitschko hit him more frequently, clay bey scored the harder shots.
its a shame clay-bey never made it into the pro's...he might be that "rival" for Wladimir that everyone is looking for to bring a spark back to the division.
bull**** 10-8....it was 5-5 goin to the last rd...such a joke...and bernstein is hugging klitschko the whole fight
I think it's a joke that it was 5-5 going into the final. I thought Wladdy scored more than that during that round.
klitchko looked about 210 /215 in that fight and did not have the weight of shot that he has now to keep clay bey off him.
It is Lawrence Cley-bey in the video isn't it? Because he did make it into the pros, I remember seeing his fight with Etienne, it was a bloody good scrap! He looked to have a granite chin, not sure what happened against Castillo!
didn't clay-bey fight a bit like james toney in the pros? only seen clips of him, been meaning to get a few of his fights on dvd for a while.
Well, that was at the 1996 Olympics and Wlad was 20 years old, Clay-Bey was 30. He was orginally intended to fight in the Heavyweight (200lbs) division because Vitali was set to fight in the Superheavyweight division. But since Vitali got suspended because of steroids shortly before the Olympics, Wlad took the SHW spot so obviously he wasn't a "big" SHW because it wouldn't do him any good to put on too much weight.
Wlad also dominated the first round... Wlad clearly won the fight, but Clay-Bey landed some huge shots. I think that they really blew Wlad supposedly being hurt out of proportion. They always do that in the ams though.
Clay Bey showed some goods as a pro, but he lacked the conditioning. He had nice defense and decent hand speed and power. His fight with Etienne is one of my favourites to watch. He lost it because he was not active enough. Going by the amatuer scoring system, I think Wlad won. Wlad would destroy him in the pros though. Wlad improved a lot from this fight, but Clay Bey did not. In the pros, Wlad would easily use the jab to win and slowly set up the KO. In the amateur system Wlad opened up a bit more, which allowed some nice counters from Clay-Bey. I think the standing 8 was legit. Again, these are amateurs, so it's quite normal for the refs to step in and give the 8. What I think is bogus is that getting the standing 8 does not give a fighter anything extra. They need to fix the rules in the amatuers.
