So there was some debate on a couple of topics in the GF about which was Hamed's best win. Personally, I can see a case for quite a few of them. Robinson, wasn't the greatest fighter Naz beat, but Naz's age and the level of that performance ranks highly. For me, in trying to balance the quality of the perfomance and the quality of the opposition, add some context about when it happened and what was at stake, I tend to lean heavily towards the win over Tom 'Boom-Boom' Johnson. Boom Boom was a fairly big featherweight, Naz was a fairly small one. Johnson was approaching the end of his career, but he was by no means shot (not even close). He had made 10 successful defences of his IBF title, and hadn't lost a fight in over six years, prior to facing Hamed, who won by TKO in the eighth. I think everyone accepts that Kelley was a great win, and certainly Hamed's most iconic and memorable fight. On paper, you could argue that Vasquez was a great win, certainly was a great performance but Vasquez was getting very close to the end of his prestigious career (he still did good in his fights post- Hamed though - certainly wasn't anything like shot). I think Medina picked up five world titles, so again on paper, that looks like a great name, although Naz wasn't at his best again him. So, what do you guys think?
I agree with Johnson, the guy wasn't at his peak but was still a very dangerous opponent. IMHO most memorable was Kelly and best performance was Robinson, he was punch perfect that night.
Yeah definetly in terms of overall performance, the Robinson fight is the one that stands out. Naz was a really young guy, fighting for a world title, and he showed no fear whatsoever, Robinson couldn't get anywhere near him and Naz was just an another level altogether.
Its gotta be Robinson for me. Robinson was the gatekeeper to World level for Hamed and he was a hard working and durable fighter, Hamed absolutely destroyed him in style .. Johnson and Kelley were exciting fights but both these guys were past they're best and kind of remind me of Hatton fight's like Vince Phillips .. Ingle was a terrible performance from Hamed, a guy like Naz, with his talent should be dominating a straight forward fighter like Ingle at that stage in his career
I'm gonna go for Cesar Soto. Here you had a hard headed arrogant tough durable and very hard hitting WBC World Featherweight Champion. I was aware of Soto long before he ever fought Hamed. Remeber that Juan Polo Perez who Naz KO'd in 2 rounds.........Soto destroyed him in two rounds too. Hamed took Soto on away from home in Detroit USA. At the half way stage Hamed was probaly losing the fight.......but knuckled down and grinded out a points win. Soto was a class above fighters like Robinison and Ingle. More durable and dangerous than Kevin Kelly. Not his best most impressive performance by any means But all in all that win was Hameds most valid
I like your way of thinking but that was a terrible 'performance' from Hamed, he should of been disqualified in that fight. Hamed body slammed Soto twice, the only reason he got away with it is because he was a money maker for HBO .. That was a disqualification if ever i saw one
Im surprised that the poll options include Bungu but not Sanchez or McCullough, i thought they were decent performances
I picked Kelly, he had agood record coming into the fight. Was Nas made for the FW division? Or was he much suited below?
Jim your making an interesting point, he had the height for a lower weight division but he had a big upper body so FW was a comfortable weight for him .... For me Naz was the most 'naturally talented' guy to come from Britain possibly for 50 years but his attitude and ego destroyed him. To fight a guy like Barerra, you have to have ultimate dedication if you want to win and by that point Naz was full of his own self-importance. Its a sad story that we had a guy that the americans could only dream of but he didnt have a champion's mentality
