Tommy Gibbons only really lost to other great fighters such as Dempsey, Greb and Tunney.

He could make the light heavyweight limit but generaly came in at around 185 lbs in catchweight bouts. He was not only a skilled technician but a dynamite puncher to boot.

My hunch is that he would have proven too big and a little to good at everything for Darcy.

You're really busting out some interesting fantasy matches. I pick Gibbons.

Well looking that both fighters were fighting at 160 in 1916/17 and the fact both guys fought George Chip

Gibbons winning NWS 10 against Chip
Darcy winning by KO 9 at the age of just 20

If they had have fought then Darcy would have slaughtered Gibbons just like he did Chip and every other Middleweight he faced.

I think some people in here forget that if Darcy had have been able to fight in the USA he would have beat every middleweight out there.

Also he is probably the most talented and best fighter that never really got a shot.

I think most forgetb that Darcy beat Clabby and Chip both easily and Chip had beaten the great Greb.

If Darcy was aloud to fight he would have beat everyone from Greb to Al McCoy.

    So i pick Darcy.

That is a bold (and probably incorect) prediction.

Guys like Greb and Gibbons wernt hypotheticals. They proved everything.

Please i dont know if you know this Janitor you so called expert but Darcy was that good they wouldnt let him box in the US.

Most writers of the time had him beating everyone from McCoy to Levinski.

a Reported 10,000 people from San Fransicso lined the Docks where the boat was to take Darcy's body back to Australia and he wasnt even American.

Darcy was 20 years old and beating guys like Clabby and Chip easily.

Janitor you should know the stories of Darcy if you are a true classic boxing fan.

Why else would a man who past away at 21 years old having already beat guys easily like Clabby,George Chip and McGoorty be in the Hall of Fame.

    What he was lucky.

Heres two comments by two great fighters of that era of middleweights that fought Darcy.

That boy's the best fighter I ever fought. He's the greatest fighter in the world. He's hard to hit and harder still to hurt. I don't think there's anyone in the world could beat him.
    Eddie McGoorty

Les Darcy is the best man in the world. I bar no one, not even Jess Willard (world heavyweight champion). The man who can take Eddie McGoory's left swing on the jaw without flinching would not be hurt by anyone.
    Fritz Holland

George Chip just before fighting Darcy had just beaten the great Harry Greb twice and Al Mcoy yet got stopped and killed by Darcy in the 9th.

Yet you give Darcy no chance.

Darcy my friend was the best middleweight going around in that era and every fighter back then knew it.

They even commented on how good he was at only 20 years old.

Id put my opinion in favour of Darcy, regarding any M/W, LH/W in the game through to 1925. Id suggest he'd give Dempsey one thourough test at H/W. Give Tunney a flogging in 1922-24, at the time he was battleing Greb, and man handle any other notables.

Greb, nothing can be taken from him, yet his KO record is poor. He was a points fighter. Taking the decision in 80% 0f his wins.

In Darcy's last year, he faught and beat every possible class opponent, KOing George Chip... who claimed Grebs scalp 3 months prior, KOd Buck Crouse in 2... who took everything Greb offered.. before retireing on his stool in 7, went 20 rounds on 2 occassions with 'KO' Brown... who also last the full rounds with Greb on 3 occassions.... Bettered Jimmy Clabby, former W/W champ... over 20 rounds twice, KOd Eddie McGoorty in 8, Alex Costica in 4, and retired Billy Murray in 6.
This being his final year of boxing... at the age of 20.

Gus Christie, Fritz Holland and Frank Loughrey are others to suffer 20 round losses to Les. He, at his young age was still unpolished, and his future was clearly brighter than any man of the era. Jeff Smith went either way, both via disq. Smith had a fondness for low blows.

BOLD (and probably incorrect) PREDICTION????? Not from where I sit.

At this weight Gibbons ,all the way. A more competitive match would be Darcy and Mike Gibbons.

    are you serious.

    Mate Mike Gibbons.

Try the Darcy would have beat
    Al McCoy
    Battling Levinski
and me i think he would have made Greb Cry.

He was 20 when he beat the man that just beat Greb in Chip yet Darcy knocked him the **** out.

We never know how far Darcy would have gone. He is like the James Dean of boxing in that regard. We all talk about Sal and Ketchal, but Darcy is more to the point. Great Champ?? Or would he flop after his big wins over Chip and Goofy?
Very few top fighters Darcy fought, but again he died real young. I like to belive he would have been one of the biggies from the 1900's to the mid 20's. Perhaps a 2 time weight champ. And a win over Greb in a few fights. Darcy is proven in the few great fighters he beating though. So its all up in the air. I do belive he would beat Gibbions imo.
