Tyson never fought Biggs in the amateurs and certainly did not lose to him!!! Care to tell us the dates and locations of these fights? Tyson's AM losses (yes, more than 3!): 1981 - Ernie Bennett 1982 - Al Evans 1983 - Craig Payne 1983 - DQ against Kimmuel Odum 1984 - Henry Tillman (Olympic trails) 1984 - Henry Tillman (Olympic box-off) I'm not sure about the Al Evans or Ernie Bennet as there seems to be limited info on those, but either way none of those are Biggs!
Mike never boxed a competition fight with Biggs as an amateur, Tyrell's stand up dominating style won him the place at Superheavyweight for the 84 games, Tyson was to travel as a substitute to LA , because when he was forced to compete for a place at heavyweight , the very slick Henry Tillman ran and took a couple of verdicts over Tyson who's style looked much more apt for that of the pro game. Tyrell was a standout as an International Amateur , he was into drugs and alcohol from a young age , he said in one interview , prior to beating Lennox Lewis and Francesco Damiani in LA , he was doing freebase (as he referred to it) leading up to all of his fights and he was amazed how he never got caught out en route to Gold.. Tyrell and Mike didn't much care for each other and at the airport leaving for the last leg of the trip to LA, a female offered a good luck kiss to Mike who was travelling with the US team, Tyrell whispered to the girl in front of Mike , "oh he wont need luck, he isn't even gonna be boxing sweety.." Mike always vowed to make Tyrell pay for that.. Biggs turned pro and was a safety first boxer who only stood and fought if he really had to.. He did have tremendous heart though, I remember him getting bad press for being too laid back , so he made a bold statement by going into his next fight hell bent on demolishing his opponent (Tony Anthony) like he was fighting someone who had threatened his moma.. The Jeff Simms fight was the one that impressed me, he broke his collarbone and boxed the whole fight commanding with his left arm poking a ramrod jab at his dangerous opponent to a shutout while in pain.. The Duvas and Shelley Finkle (who advised and managed and promoted him) were forced in 87 to make a quick bold move , before he became broken damaged goods, they wanted a quick return for Biggs so they pushed him overmatched towards a meeting with Tyson to get a fast cash return for thier (headcase heavyweight) as they called him... He was the WBA #1 ranked heavy, and featured on the Tyson v Smith card at the las vegas Hilton against portly journeyman David Bey as a showcase for his upcoming meeting with Tyson , but it so nearly all went wrong, Biggs made hard work of it and in slugging with his shorter opponent , Biggs got a horrendous cut over his eye and was seconds away from being pulled out , when told by the doctor at ringside he had 1 more round left due to the eye worsening, He rallied and knocked Bey out and saved his championship shot.. he boxed a quick ko win over Oklahoman heavy Lorenzo Boyd in Texas in preps for Tyson, and promised to shock everyone when he spanked tyson like he was his daddy.. Tyrell looked great for 2 rounds before Tyson stalked him down and demoralized him cutting open the same eye from the bey fight, and Koing him in the seventh in NJ.. Biggs was actually dropped almost immediately by Main Events boxing and later signed to a new manager Leslie Roncari , a female racehorse owner from Winsor Locks connecticut , and boxed against tough guys in the UK and Italy losing both times to old amateur foe Damiani in Milan, and unbeaten Gary Mason in London. He was helped out by fellow Philly fighter Jimmy Young in the corner in most of his last fights, and impressively started to grab a few wins late in his career (over Occasio, and an unbeaten rising pro called Rodolpho Marin) before bringing down his career in gallant showings against Bowe and Lewis getting stopped by both men in his last couple of stanzas.. Biggs was employed by Kirk Johnston and Ken Lillen , Kirks manager as a helping hand in Kirks rise towards the title, but didnt spar in the end because he became what Lillen described as a liability to himself but was a very useful man to have on board as advisory.. Tyrell lives (or did ) reside in Atlanta for a while but moved back to North Philly to his old roots.. He earned good cash in his career and last time i saw him he look very happy with his life.. He was a magnificent amateur, but a good and dangerous pro , but never a champion.. a great guy though who was an expert standup boxer .. God bless..
Check out his Olympic match with Lennox Lewis...it was a pretty brilliant performance to handle and beat Lennox the way he did.
Yes he dominated Lewis (18 years old) Tyrell was an incredible amateur , but remember him getting knocked out by Teofilio Stevenson......
Tyrell Biggs had a successful amateur career, beating Lennox Lewis in 1984 and bringing home the gold medal. As a pro, he trained with the ever dynamic Duva family with Lou Duva being his trainer and son Dan Duva doing all the promoting. Biggs was a large heavyweight at 6'5", 220 Lbs, but not much for punching power nor taking it for that matter. His real asset was a good jab, servicable right cross, and halfway decent footwork. Biggs started off in his first several fights beating respectable comp in Tillis, Bey, Snipes, and a dangerous journeyman puncher name Jeff Simms. Tyrell showed heart against Simms when Jeff broke his colar bone, and Biggs gutted it out to win a decision. After losing to Tyson, his career pretty much fell apart and whatever potential was there, basically got squandered. The Duva family threw a big party for him after he lost to Tyson, then stiffed him with the bill saying " you lost, you pay. " Needless to say his relationship with that family was over, and they parted ways. He never again hooked up with a quality manager or promotor after 1987. After taking a year off, he returned to the ring to face Euro contender Francesco Damiani - a fight that biggs was winning, but ended up losing due to an accidental headbutt that led to a stoppage on cuts. He took another year off and was KO'd by Gary Mason upon his return. Biggs apparently had drug and alcohol issues during the time that he was laying dormant and ended up pissing away all his earning. Around 1990, I saw him step in the ring with veteran journeyman Ossie Ocasio. Biggs was originally scheduled to fight Carl " the truth " Williams, but Truth backed out at the last minute due to injury and Ocasio was called in to substitute. Former contender Jimmy Young was working Bigg's corner. The fight was more boring than watching old people ****, and it was apparent to me that Biggs ability had thoroughly diminished. In the years that followed, Biggs basically became a build-up opponent who was fed to young rising fighters such as Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. He never recovered from the misfortunes that he succumed during the late 1980's, and 10 years into his pro career was still making the same sort of mistakes that one would expect from a novice.
Biggs just seemed to be one of those fighters who had difficulty ad******g from the amateurs to the pro ranks. His substance abuse, as other posters have pointed out, certainly didn't help him and according to everything that I have heard and read (further confirmed in this thread), Biggs was definitely rushed by the Duvas into the Tyson fight because they knew he was a trainwreck waiting to happen. The cut he suffered against Bey was horrible and I'm not a medical authority so I can't say whether or not 7 months was a sufficient amount of time for it to heal but I can say that Mike Tyson is the last guy you want to be fighting when you have sustained such an injury. The HBO commentators made it a point to focus on the cut and the potential impact it could have. Not only did Tyson reopen it, he elbowed it, and punched it until Biggs looked as though he was wearing a crimson mask. It was just a bad night for Tyrell. You couldn't help but feel for the guy cuz Tyson roughed him up badly.
His management moved him WAY too quickly and put him in against Tyson way before he was ready. However, I suspect this was because they were aware of his drug use and wanted to cash out before he went right down the shitter.
