I watched a documentry on this last night on British TV and have reached three conclusions:

    1. Ali was a racist ****
    2. After witnessing the 14th round I am now finally of the belief that Ali would have beaten Tyson if he managed to overcome the initial onslaught.
    3. Tyson v Frazer would have been 'fight of the century'

Yeah I watched it too, was a good programme, little devoid of people from Ali's side though. Saying that, Frazier would have won if they hadn't stopped it thats for sure.

    really?

joe was always a pretty slow starter and like you said above about ali-tyson it's all about the initial onslaught, when tyson is at his most dangerous.

i'd be putting my money on an early tyson stoppage, before joe's engine is warmed and running.

I watched the same documentary and must say it was awesome.

On your first point, while I agree, it got me thinking... in an America that was inheritently racist at the time, how difficuly would it have been for an Ali that seen himself as a revolutionary to respect someone who pretty much epitomised what the white man seen as a typical black man? Not excusing it at all, just something to consider.

In the doc itself though, I thought Frazier came across as well reasoned. Particularly the story from his son. For those that didnt see it, after the third fight, Ali invited Frazier's son to his dressing room and apologised for all the things he'd said about Frazier. When Marvin told his old man, Frazier said 'Why didnt he say that to me?'. Go to think that the man has a point.

Great watch that last night, hoping to catch it again so I can tape it next time!

Tyson vs Frazer would not have been fight of the century. Tyson would KO him in the 4/5 round

  6. Ali is scum.

    Nothing more to be said.

I threw the last one in for a bit of discussion. I just thought he was total aggression in the first fight.

This documentary has been run about six times in six weeks, on more 4, E4 and now finally on channel four. It's been funny watching people crack up about Ali as they caught it...the way Ali behaved is indefendable, but it's worth pointing out who was pissing in his ear at that time - Ali had become defined by race, almost totally, during his expulsion from boxing.

But I have to say - the program was pretty soft on Ali. He said worse, and Joe had some really shakey moments which weren't touched upon.

Two things I would say about this - firstly, the Frazier from Manilla is nothing like as good as the fighter from the Fight Of The Century. He lost speed in his hands, he found it harder slipping punches, he was suffering from arthritis, he found closing the distance tougher. The FOTC Frazier, IMO, couldn't be outpointed - you had to KO him to beat him. I think that Tyson would have been one of the guys that could have KO'd him though.

But you're right - if Frazier somehow gets out of the early rounds, his comeback would be a sight to behold.

  9. Why what did Joe do?

Does it matter the who or why? The man made stupid decisions throughout his life, and made little attempt to rectify them when it mattered, preferring to hide behind it - and his larger than life status. Look at the reaction to Hopkins "white boy" over Calzaghe, that was washed down beyond belief and there was still a big stir over it, then when black AND white people were backing Ali during his humiliation of Joe?

I know he'd be under pressure - with the NoI, but at the same time, he chose to align himself with them - and I can't honestly say I believe he didnt go to the war on the reasons attributed to him, considering how he acts with everything else - it wouldn't surprise me.

  10. You seen that doctor? his trainer?

That doctor is very annoying and NEEDS a slap.

Ali was a disgrace. Frazier was an honest man trying his best.

Let's not make a victim or Frazier to much here - Frazier smashed Ali up in the first meeting when Joe was at his absolute peak and Ali wasn't to far removed from his. Ali ruined Frazier that night, but Joe had his satisfaction in the Fight of the Century.

"I kicked your ass" as Joe told Muhammad at the final bell, and he sure as **** did.

I watched this the other night, good documentary.

It's well known how badly Ali treated Frazier back in those days, I don't believe he knew how badly he was going to hurt Frazier and his kids with those remarks but that doesn't excuse him saying them.

Having said that I don't think it's very 'Christian' of Frazier to seemingly take pleasure from seeing Ali the way he is today either...but I can understand why he's bitter, think I would be too.

  14. Frazier suffered more out of the ring than in - death threats is hard to over come remember...

    Ali never crawled :p

My interest in boxing started in the mid eighties and for the last 20 years I have heard how these old time fighters could hold their own, infact beat some of the big guys of today. I always thought it was **** as athletes - 100 metres for example are always improving and get faster and stronger through the years.
Having watched this documentry for the first time last night my eyes were truly opened to the quality of these guys and I was amazed and saddened that we no longer have heavyweight fights & rivalries to match them.
