I've only seen his two fights with Hagler, so I clearly have never seen the best of him. Would love to see his fights against Czyz or Minter? Any opinions on just how good this tough middleweight was?
Strong chin like Hagler's. very strong but doesnt carry the power of a Roldan or Sibson and has minimal skills. In his prime often displayed lusty punching and rarely backed up. I saw him hurt only twice, once by Minter and in the Hagler rematch. seems to petrify certain opponents such as Benitez and Czyz. Wilfred was basically too scared to fight back and was content to stay in one corner and let Hamsho pound him for 12 rounds. In other words, he froze up. So did Czyz. You could tell Bobby was trying to fight off the fear but Mustafa has that effect. It's like you're fighting a strong animal that you can't keep off you. So yeah he was pretty good
Hamsho was rugged but limited.... He beat a green / passive Czyz on TV back around 1982.... I saw that fight...... Czyz was green...... 160 was a strain for Hamsho.... He really needed 168 during his career, but the division did NOT exist then.... I think Hamsho attempted a fight or two at 170 to 175 pounds later on.... Not sure what happened..... By 1984, Hamsho had nothing at 160, and it showed when Hagler KO'd him easy inside 3 rds at MSG..... MR.BILL
Hagler also gave perhaps his best career performance in the first Hamsho fight. Hagler boxed beautifully that night, and took Hamsho apart like a surgeon.
Actually, I would say that was Hagler's second best career performance, the first being the rematch with Hamsho.
