What settled it for me was that Abraham actually had his jaw broken yet was never knocked down. We're not talking about fights being stopped here, we're talking about fighters getting KTFO or going down. To me Abraham showed great chin in standing up to Mirandas shots even though his actual CHIN had caved in.

The Jermain Taylor fight summed it up for me, Pavlik was down on the floor and on ***** street; it wasnt Pavlik's chin that saved him it was Taylor ****ing up and not finishing.

I do give Kelly credit however for standing up to some flush Bernard Hopkins shots, which saved him from the shaky catergory.

    A few things:

there referee in the Abraham vs Miranda fight was American. There is no German conspiracy for that fight.

Edison Miranda has a Glass Jaw. The guy has been knocked all over the canvas in his career yet he still continues to run his Glass Jaw like he is a World Champion.

Abraham showed extreme heart and guts in that fight and he won fair and square. It is not Abraham's fault Miranda could not KO a guy with a broken jaw.

Also none of the judges were german, they were raffaele argiolas of italy, larry hazard of the us, and dave parris of the uk.

    Some interesting points being made.

Where would you guys rank the chins of:

    Israel Vasquez ?
    Rafael Marquez ?
    Miguel Cotto ?

Also im going to do some serious reviewing of Anthony Mundines chin, apparantly he's been on the canvas 4 times in his last 5 fights. That combined with the 15minute sleeping sessions against Sven Ottke (Paulie Malignaggi LITE).

It could be that we have a glarring omission from the Glass Jaw ranks.

I said Cotto had a questionable Chin at 140. He has showed no Chin problems at 147. I was wrong about Cotto he has an above average but not granite Chin.

Abraham is double tough, and has the balls of a freaking rhinocerous. No one can take that from him. However, a fighter with decent finishing skills would have put him away. Miranda's lack of skill doesn't say anything about Arthur's chin. The fact that someone in the mix kept Arthur away from Zuniga, and allowed him to defend against Ayala probably does.

As far as Pavlik/Taylor I goes, I think it was a combination of Kelly knowing what to do when he's hurt, and JT not keeping his head together enough to finish him. We really need to remember that by the end of that round, KP was the agressor, and Taylor was initiating the clinches. You cannot attribute Pavlik's quick recovery to JT's lack of finishing skills. The quick recovery is an attribute of being a tough *******.

All in all I think your original post is quite good. I just think you've got Arthur one notch to high, and Pavlik one notch to low.

Great post by the thread starter, I agree with his picks for glass jaws, as well as his iron jaw picks.

There are too many dumasses that call too many boxers "glass jaws" simply because of a knock down.

Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out by two hard punchers. I would not call them "less stellar". Also, he was not shook by anyone else in his career. His first knock down was a slip on the Budweiser label.

Agreed -- I've often wondered what these guys would have said about the guy in my avatar. Danny used to get knocked down routinely, but the truth is he was one tough son of a *****. Rarely hurt, cut, or bruised up, and was once accused of planning his knock outs from the seat of his pants! Sometimes knock downs are a product of balance issues, and have nothing to do with the chin.

I don't agree with your picks of Litzau or Judah as glass jaws, and I believe that Khan's jaw is exaggerated. Litzau took a lot of shots from Guerrero before going down, and Judah got KO'd in his fight with Kostya on a vicious punch. He seems to get tired and lacks focus later on in fights, but I can't call him a glass jaw, that's quite an exaggeration.

Wrong, going rounds with a broken jaw and being able to take shots in that condition qualifies as having a great chin.

Your point about it being a TKO elsewhere in the world is erroneous. The fact is that he was allowed to continue and showed grit to go on.

Your point about it being a "gift decision" is also erroneous. This is a discussion about Chins, where the scoring of a fight has no bearing.
