This thread is for the purpose of settling an argument between a friend and I.

In your opinion, what were Alexis's 3 greatest fights, taking into consideration both quality of performance and quality of opposition?

And as a footnote, which fight of his do you find most enjoyable to watch?

    Cheers guys :good

Im going to throw out Olivares, Chacon and Mancini mostly because I have seen them. Im sure there is an arguement for Ramirez or Escalera but I havent seen them (bar some highlights of Escalera II).

Olivares-Arguello is one of my fav fights, Ill go with that as the best.

I really think someone else will come up with something better but for now thats my hastily written take.

I don't think he looked particularly great in either the Olivares or Chacon fights, as he was behind at the time of the stoppages on my cards. Then again, he was often behind in his fights with his best opposition before turning it on down the stretch, that was his way. It was also one of the reasons he was susceptible to skilled pure boxers, and why I think Floyd would beat him handily.

His fights with Escalera were probably my favorites.

    Escalera.

Mancini; was a limited fighter but Alexis was past his best and played the Matador to Mancini's bull. Awesome.

Was way behind against Olivares before he came back to stop him, so I'd say Koyabashi, who was undefeated when Arguello beat him and went on to be a decent fighter indeed.

I agree with this, Chacon, Oliveiras and Mancini catch the eye on his record, but he rarely dominated from round one onwards in his fights.

I managed to get hold of most of Arguellos televised fights and the Escalero fights are me favourite. the Watt fight is a nice technical match aswel.

Ive only seen the 1st Escalera fight, that was a good win but disappointing that the doc stopped it rather than AA finishing him... Ive seen highlights of the 2nd fight, Alexis TKOs him properly in that one.

Olivares, Mancini, Chacon, Limon, Castillo & Watt were among his best wins IMO.

Too hard to choose just 3.

Olivares, Escalera II, Mancini. Honorable Mention Boza-Edwards, Chacon, Limon, Navarette, Watt. Despite it being a loss, I thought he performed well against Ernesto Marcel who I think was a great fighter in his own right and had the skills to trouble Arguello greatly.

    Escalera II

The Macinni fight was a bit of a novelty. I think the main reason it is so memorable was that Ray was so much better than most of us thought he was. Arguello's team wanted a 1st or 2nd round KO. They thought that letting this kid go any further would be very damaging to Arguello's standing. After the 1st round Alexis went back to his corner and said something like, "Guys, this is no easy knock out. I have to be careful with this kid."

And just for shits and giggles, here ya go!

Tell your friend that Escalera I is his single greatest fight, satisfying both criteria you set forth. Escalera was a very good, long reigning champion and Arguello pretty much controlled him the whole fight, busted him up and stopped him. That was Arguello's peak performance IMO.

Hard to say what the other two fights would be, but Watt and Mancini are both strong candidates. Against Watt, Arguello shut down another good and potentially difficult champion to win a third title, and Mancini was a very strong, upstart challenger coming off a very impressive win over Jose Luis Ramirez (who had previously given Arguello heaps of trouble).

His fights with Escalera and Olivares are his three best I feel.

He might've been behind on the official scorecards, but that doesn't tell the full story in either fight. Even though Chacon was ahead on points, Arguello didn't allow him to do any real damage to him either, and he basically made Chacon stay on his stool, which in itself is a helluvan achievement.

Remember also against Olivares, Arguello was coming in as a heavy underdog against a still very respected champion and HOFer. That Arguello gave him such a competitive fight and ultimately KO'd him like he did went contrary to all expectations. It was also impressive as a comeback performance from Arguello after being made to look raw and green against Ernesto Marcel not too long before.

The Marcel fight was way after he beat Olivares.
