Close fight. Hopkins would probably edge it out with the more effective punching. "Prime" Calzaghe (as in physical) probably would have been less effective than the version Hopkins fought. He was wilder, less intelligent and more complacent then. Peak Calzaghe was only a couple of years ago imo.
although hopkiuns is 43 i dont think he was much better at 33 and calzaghe had his best performance in his last fight at 36 so i see calzaghe being the best any time
I think the Hopkins that fought Johnson would have the workrate and guile to see his way to a close but clear UD over Calzaghe. I happen to think if they fought again this March Hopkins would take him.
The Johnson win shouldn't be overlooked. No-one has ever given him a beating like that. A rather glib remark wouldn't you say?
Glib but true. Thirty six year old Hopkins had the fight lined up for him, on his home turf, no need to travel, and chose not to take it in favour of Joppy and the much anticipated Hopkins Allen 3. No doubt if it had been Calzaghe who pulled out the judgements now would be much much harsher.
Are you sure it was lined up on his turf? I thought the fight was going to happen in Wales. Did you get my PM by the way?
My memory is that Frank Warren was making noises about staging it in Cardiff, but the feeling was it would probably end up in the US as Showtime were the prime movers in the deal. Hopkins was to fight Morrade Hakkar as the first fight in the deal. When he pulled out he ended up still fighting Hakkar, but for half as much money... Apparantly I don't know how pms work, but I see it now! Cheers for that.
:huh I coulda sworn Calzaghe won that fight. Anyway... a prime v prime fight between these 2 great fighters would always be a close affair, no dominations here. Hop would have a little more gas in the tank for the later rds but not quite a solid defence as he has now... Joe sat down on his punches a bit more. I go with Calzaghe in another close one, that come forward style makes Bernard make moves he wouldnt normally make if he was given a normal amount of time to figure the situation out... but JC doesnt fight at a normal pace, its a `suck the life out of you` type pace & it would tell vs most fighters from 168 downwards in history IMO. Who looks better on a resume? DLH and Tito Trinidad or Tocker Pudwell and Will Mcintyre? P.s he was a underdog for The tito and slightly for the Winky Wright fight.
Calzaghe wouldve always given Hopkins hell. A younger would fight more and be more aggressive, this plays into Joe hands. Hopkins spoiling their fight with his dirty cheatin tactics was the only reason the fight was close. If the fight wouldve taken plave 6 years ago like was agreed, then Calzaghe would have won a clearer decision, though the fight would still be reltively close.
Do you normally compare resumes by comparing two of the best wins on one to two of the less relevant wins on the other (one of which was a late stand in)? Who looks better on a resume, Bernard Hopkins and Mikkel Kessler or Andrew Council and Steve Frank? Who cares?
