He did use head movement in 95-97. Not as much as during his prime perhaps, but if you watch for instance the Tucker fight, you'll see that his head movement after the 6th was greatly diminished as well. Tyson being able to do that constantly for 12 rounds during his peak is just as much as myth as Ali being able to dance on his toes for 15 rounds during his peak.
I would say he had around a 5 - 6 year prime period where we seen the best of him. After the Bruno fight with him going to jail etc it all went downhill for him as we all know. I think he must be one of the most amazingly talented fighters that could be said to have never truly went on and developed there true potential. Imagine what we could have seen from him and what he could have done if he didn't have all those outside goings on and he never went to jail, it's a real shame tbh.
Correct: he particularly used a lot of head-movement against Holyfield, especially in their second fight. It just didn't work as well at that level.
I think Tyson's career peak stretched from about the Pinklon Thomas fight of early 1987 to the Spinks fight of mid 1988. Basically we're looking at a span of roughly 7 or 8 fights where he was at his absolute best. Following the Spinks fight, I wouldn't label him as being past prime so much as I would damaged goods. Trainer Kevin Rooney and manager Bill Cayton were fired following the Spinks fight, and his camp was never adequately replaced in my honest opinion. Additonally, his life outside of the ring had deteriorated and he was doing everything from going through a bad divorce, to getting into fist fights on the street, to having his punk friends present during training sessions, etc, etc, etc.... By the first meeting with Frank Bruno in February of 1989, we were clearly looking at a different man. Upon the loss to Douglas, I think that firing team Tyson and bringing aboard Rich Giachetti helped Mike to restore some of his old stuff, as he was clearly better against Alex Stewart and Razor Ruddock than he was against Douglas, but I still don't think that the old Tyson ever returned.
