Hello Everyone, I have been a lurker here for quite a awhile and finally joined today. I was hoping you guys could help me with something. I am looking to buy a bag but I cannot hang a heavybag in my garage. I am looking at getting a Free Standing Bag like Wavemaster XXL or Ringside Free Standing Heavy Bag. My other option is buying one of those Everlast Heavy Bag stands. I know the Free Standing Bags don't have the best reputations but those Everlast Bag Stands that are in my price range look like they aren't very solid. Any opinions you guys could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

welcome welb, i cant speak on any experience of a actual fighter, but i have exercised with a heavy bag many years now. i think if you are planning on learning how to fight, you may want to get a heavy bag that is attached and can swing freely. i remember hearing that part of a heavy bags purpose in training is to emulate movement to help you to negate your own timing and distance.

i dont really know to much about the free standing bags, but im sure due to there compact stature and water base, they must be economical or space saving.

on last thing that can help with is to understand the heavy bag wear. i had this cheap canvas "tko" bag in our garage and it withstood the tests of time. i think heavy bags tend to be cheap and certain cheap bags (like that "tko" bag) will last literally for almost a decade. im sure thats provided that you do the heavy maintanence which is to take it down and roll it around to get the weight evenly distributed.

one last thing that i can help you with:

i would stay away from the h2o water heavy bags. those being the one with a water bladder inside. great idea! very gentle on your hands and lasts about 2 weeks untill theres a leak in the bladder. i flattered myself thinking that it was my great effort that caused the hemmorage but the bag justified that i was nothing extrodinary by hemmoraging again after a replacement bladder was purchased.

    Thanks for the advice!

I probably will go with one those stands from Everlast that you can hang the Heavy Bag from. I have plenty of weights to put on it to make sure it stays put. I'm sure it will be solid enough. It's not like it will be Mike Tyson circa 1987 hitting the thing, :)

heavybag stands are horrible! the one I had didnt let the bag swing much and i'd keep stubbing my toes on it trying to go to the sides, with a stand your basically limited to forwards and back movement. If you cant get one hung up just buy a free standing one and move around it, dont just stand in front of it and wail on it.

Yeah, I guess all of the stands I've seen really don't allow much access to the bag as far as moving around it. I just know that I've been told a hanging heavy bag is preferred over free standing ones so I thought the bag stand might be an alternative. Now I really don't know what to do, lol.

While I'm looking for boxing gloves, I might as well check for the heavy bag too. I got this when I was 14 just to play around. Now I'm in my 20s and punching it for 5 minutes makes the thing move around too much. Instead of using water, I'll try filling the base with sand. That should keep it still. If this thing doesn't work - I'll get me a heavy bag with a separate stand.

Out of curiosity - anyone know what bag Foreman was hitting in Rumble in the Jungle (and where such bags can be purchased?)?

I do wish my town had a gym that I could join. Sadly, it doesn't.

the clip is towards the end of the video at 7:10. move the playback arrow 1/3" from the end and you'll see it.

    it looks like this product

    http://www.buy.com/prod/everlast-80lb-nevatear-heavy-bag/q/loc/17250/203648986.html

but i doubt that 80 lb is enough for big george. the biggest size bag from any brand i saw online is 100 lb.

everyone says everlast is crap (and i believe them) but it's funny that all the champions use everlast.
