atsch Why is there such blind xenophobic nationalism on this forum (from both sides...US and abroad)? Calzaghe's legacy, tho great, does not come close to matching up with the likes of Roy Jones or Bernard Hopkins...this has nothing to do with his place of origin. We are talking two of the top 20-40 fighters ever on an ATG scale (where they normally sit in most peoples lists). I swear some "boxing fans" that post on here are really just glorified nationalistic fans of FIGHTERS....not the actual sport. Being one of those things is ok...the other is a ****ing disgrace. And people wonder why I hardly post on here anymore...:verysad
Comment of the Year. :happy:happy:happy This is a perfect definition of someone who believes Calzaghe is up there with Jones and Hopkins, and a perfect definition of the mentality which ruins this forum.
Unless he wins world titles at cruiser and heavy. And there's more chance of Enzo C winning Miss Wales.
Let's not forget that Calzaghe was THE Champion at 168 and 175. Jones was THE Champion at 175 and even that is debatable. Holding trinket belts at 160, 168, and Heavyweight does not mean a thing.
He has as good a shot as anyone. Jones wasted his prime fighting bums much like Calzaghe did so who knows. We will never know how good Jones was because of this. We saw what happened when a past prime Jones and past prime Calzaghe fought. Jones got schooled.
I think Jones in his prime schools Joe. I also think that the version of JC that beat Jones was closer to his prime than Jones was.
Id probably say he cant. But he would have to beat Chad Dawson, B-Hop (convincingly), and Glen Johnson, move up to cruiserweight and beat Adamek
If you want to be realistic then you have to admit Calzaghe is pretty close to Hopkins in terms of legcy otherwise your just as nationalistic as anyone else.
Well I consider myself Scottish first and foremost so how does that work? I also dislike many British fighters if we go down that route... I have debated both yourself and Sues2nd on this matter and I think it's fair to conclude that while that comment might be applicable in some cases, it isn't always. That being said, I don't hear enough fans of both fighters giving a full explanation for their position, at least on the GF. It can just descend into petty insult throwing and accusations of bias based on ones origins...I agree with that. I believe it can be argued, and forcefully that Calzaghe has a similar resume to Hopkins though a clearly inferior one to RJJ. No shame in that though. Just a pity not enough people take the time to construct a full argument detailing their position.
