I agree with this in essence, however there are a couple of situations where I'm unsure about it....

Take Michael Spinks. He was the linear HW Champ back in the day but I felt that he relinquished his claim somewhat when he decided not to participate in the tournament and then took fights against inferior opponents...

    Same with Foreman in 1995....

They just complicate everything more than anything by simply existing!

hell some people consider the WBO legit now I don't really have an opinion either way as it is the fighter that makes the belt not the belt that makes the fighter.

    :good

It depends from organization to organization.
The WBC have the most out****ingrageous ones.Something like 25k for a title fight and they don't let you keep the belt unless you don't pay 2k.:-(

Yeah, fair do's but it opens the door to champs ducking contenders again. When Lewis dropped his fourth and final belt and retired, I reckon he was ducking a re-match with Vit, if he had more belts at that time he could have just dropped the WBC and gave it the 'I already beat Klitschko' bull****.

I know the WBC is like 30k and the WBO like 20k or that is close to what Pavlik is paying for each of his defenses. For sure it has to do with what the fighters purse is for the fight though as I can't see them charging that to fighters like the straw weights who only make like 40k a fight anyway.

Nope. Don't recognise the WBO - and never will.

I think the fees are a percentage of the fighter's purse, to a maximum amount. There was an article on Seconds Out a while back detailing it all.

I think the WBO was 3% of purse up to a maximum $90k for a $3m purse.

    Pretty cool, eh?

Ridiculous especailly for the guys in the lower weights that don't make that much. If you're making 5 mil for a fight no biggie but if you're making 75K big deal.

I know what you mean but it was nice to be able to trace the linear title from Lennox Lewis all the way back to Floyd Patterson.

It would be interesting to know what Vic Darchinyan will have to pay in fees when he defends his three belts against Arce. I'm pretty sure the challenger pays money too.
