The reason Bernard is still underrated today and looked so good to many's surprise against Pavlik is because he's been fighting strictly southpaws since Taylor. People forgot.
Well....to point out. Hop set out to make a point with PAV after loosing to Joe. I think the "AGE" thing was weighing on Hopkins mind. he' said it before. He didn't want to shoot his load and not have anything left. Mentally Hopkins had it in his mind he'd conserve and reserve energy for the later rounds and Hopkins for the last 4 yrs ALWAYS faught that way. Joe is a Talented and skilled fighter no doubt. He's a great boxer and no mater what Nard said...he knew that. He respected Joe and it showed in the fight...he Respected Joe's ability in nothing else and he wouldn't open up for fear of missing, paying and loosing energy. Being 43 definitely contributed to his lack of offense with Joe. With PAV he knew he couldn't fight like he did and win with someone just as active and more powerful than JOE C.
That is anther point! Nard definitely hasn't taken the easy road...but truth be told...with PAV he turn the clock back....shifted in to a gear we haven't seen from him in a LONG Time!
Check it out, I don''t want to get into it with you Bazooka, been admired your posts since I first came on here. BUT... Something was amiss with Hopkins that night. Freddy Roach publicly stated that he asked Bernard what was wrong, because training had gone so well. Bernard would not answer him. Same after the fight, Freddie said that if Bernard could not tell him why he fought like that, he would not only not work with him again, but recommend immediately retire. Freddie was 100% against him fighting Pavlik because he would never tell Freddie what was wrong. Bernard looked so shitty against Joe, the experts made him a ****in 4-1 under dog against a MW coming up that had only had 1 title defense to his record. Then against Pavlik he fought like a damned 21 year old, but with 20+ years boxing experience. You are very knowledgeable about the fight game Bazooka, when have you EVER seen Bernard run out of gas??? Sometimes he might have started slow (Taylor 4 example), but never run out of gas and go as far as to try to buy time to get some steam back.
that includes me! Fantastic point, sir. Had never even crossed my mind, and it is absolutely the truth.
I don't know, did he? Beats the **** out of me. For one, I was talkin' to Bazooka, that's who I was gettin' at. And what in there is untrue, sir? Well I guess my point was, whether or not you've ever liked Hopkins style or what ever, that was the absolute shittiest he'd ever performed. Enough to make his trainer say retire or I'm gone any way, and experts to pick a new MW Champ with 1 title defense to wax that ass 4-1. You tell me.
I'm not saying anything you said is untrue. Just when you were quoting the bookies price I was asking if you thought Nard had tried to lengthen the odds on himself against Pavlik by acting as though he was loosing the plot. It wouldn't be the first time it had happened, though I'm not saying B-Hops done that kind of thing before. I remember him challenging Pavlik to put $250k on himself to win, I thought maybe Hopkins had actually placed the same bet or something.
OK I read ya' now, but I didn't know about the 250K or none of that. To me he would have had to know he would get the Pavlik fight, look terrible enough in the Calz fight to know he'd get 4-1 odds when they did, and if all that is true, then hell yeah, maybe Mr. Hopkins bet his whole purse on himself and broke the bookies DOWN. Smart mo'jo' that Mr. Hopkins. Prolly hell to beat at chess.
Yeah, I think it would be going too far to think he actually threw the fight with Calzaghe, but I thought Freddie Roaches comments could well have been stage managed. If not to lengthen the odds on Nard, at least to lure Pav into a sense of over-confidence. I always thought Roach was an expert at training fighters to beat southpaws and the fact he wasn't training Hopkins for the Pav fight was probably just cause Pav wasn't a southpaw (the first righty Nard had fought in 3 years). Roach and Hopkins are always talking about how good freinds they are. Just a theory anyway.
