Dan Raphael just now on ESPN2 said Kelly Pavlik lost to Bernard Hopkins because he had elbow problems and because he was sick. Is there any true to this or his Raphael downplaying Kelly's loss to Hopkins?:huh

I heard Arum mentioning this the other day but it's Pavlik's fault for taking the fight knowing he was too sick.

I just watched it and Dan said he feels that if Kelly was perfectly healthy he MIGHT have just lost 8 rounds instead of all 12. He said it was a master class by Hopkins and he didn't see a way for even the best Pavlik to beat him on that night, just maybe not lose quite as badly as he did.

I think Dan had it right. It would been a UD for BHop with scores around 116-112. Might have been a very good fight. Kelly had bronchitis with a fever of 101 degrees just one day before the fight; he was also on multiple antibiotics. The elbow injury reduced his sparring to almost nothing. Pavlik at 100% would still lose to that version of BHop.

If this is all true, then, why the hell did Pavlik's team let him fight? Sounds pretty stupid to me.:nut

They also said they would give Hopkins thew first 12 rounds just to show him they can KO him the the 13th.
Nobody told them they make'e, 12 rounders now.

First off, the injury and illness are all well documented. There is no "if" to it.

It wasn't a matter of his team "letting" him. Jack Leow, Mike Pavlik SR, and Miguel Diaz all tried to get Pav to post pone when the elbow injury happened, and again when he came down with bronchitis. Kelly would not have any part of post poning. Typical case of a fighter thinking with his balls instead of his brain. At the world class level of boxing that is NEVER a good thing. I hope KP learned his lesson.

Just the way certain fighters are. Joe Frazier fought with a long list of medical complaints. Harry Greb fought blind. Two extreme examples there, but more recently Hatton fought with flu. Clinton Woods fought with meningitis.

All of these are tough, hard working, honest fighters.
