What Fights Have You Watched Recently?

What a series. I look forward to finding this third installment and scoring it myself.

 

How'd you score it? I watched the Ibeabuchi/Tua fight a couple days ago. Gave Ike the first four rounds and felt Tua took over from there and ended up with a 115-113 scorecard in favor of Tua. He was really punishing Ike near the end of the fight with some brutal power punches. I also think a judge in the fight had a scorecard of 117-111 which is absolutely baffling to me.

 

................Not sure why I didn't, but I didn't bother to score it. I watched Chavez-Laporte the day before and meticulously scored that one, but that was mostly because I remember reading in the magazines at the time that Laporte got the bad end of the stick there. World Boxing even ran a story wit the title "Julio Cesar Chavez: Loser And Still Champion?" I wanted to see for myself.

Ibeabuchi-Tua I just watched for fun because I'd read it was good. I did a little mental tally up through about five rounds, and I had Ike winning the first four, and Tua winning the fifth, and after that kind of lost focus on scoring.

Man, Spinks/Coetzee sure brings back memories. I watched that myself a few months back. What isn't captured in that bout whatsoever is the shock factor of that result. And the devastation to the Spinks career.It was up there with Foreman/Frazier 1 & Bobick/Norton. But it just isn't captured reviewing the tape & wasn't captured live back then either. Spinks was flat out destroyed by the guy. And destroyed heavyweights are worth about as much as a destroyed 76 AMC Pacer.

Back then it was very difficult to know much about heavies outside the U.S. Let alone see their bouts. But you knew the guy was a big hitter. But everyone was on the Spinks bandwagon back then and thought he'd rebound from that decision loss from that Ali bout. They were certain of it. Most folks felt Spinks fought a stupid fight in the rematch and if he ever got a rematch for a 3rd Ali bout, he'd get in top shape again and win it. Coetzee really wasn't considered all that dangerous of an opponent and to say was overlooked is an understatement.

But Leon in the ring after that bout sure seemed to sense the ballgame was over for him. That breaking down and crying over such a devastating defeat was something you don't see often but whenever you do, it really is all over for someone.


It's a good bout to rewatch but man, was it ever devastating to the career of Leon Spinks.

Nothing wrong with that Chavez-Laporte card. Had Julio up by a couple points myself, but it was definitely close.

I was contemplating what Rocky Lockridge's standing would have been like if he got the nod against Pedroza, Lockridge and Gomez, and so I'll contemplate now what Laporte's standing would be like if he got the wins against Chavez and Pedroza. Has arguments in both cases imo. Would definitely look better than the stepping stone for the elite that he is often reduced to today.....

Here we see the best of the Bomber, including some unheralded qualities: proper ring movement (on the toes) working off the jab for openings against a taller opponent; diffusing bombs against the ropes; rapier counterpunching; not to mention the bone-crunching combinations. He was no simple brute. I dare say he was a very good boxer, with dynamite in both hands.

Yeah, Louis looks scary.

 

Watched:

Arguello/Limon- I always wanted to see this fight as it sounded like a good fight on paper and for the most part it lived up to its reputation. Arguello was just too high on the skill chart for Limon who looked sharp and had his moments early on. Arguello used his superior ability to carve up Limon who just couldn't keep up with Arguello at the end. An aside of course but with his fro, Limon shares a small resemblance to Salvador Sanchez. Emphasis on SMALL.

Freitas-Casamayor- A close fight where I had Casa winning at the end. This fight makes me wonder how Casa will be viewed historically in the grand scheme of things. He really should've won this fight and I thought he won Casa-Corrales II. It'll be intriguing to see where he figures in historically when all is said and done especially in an era filled with guys like Freitas, Castillo, Corrales and such. I have to imagine that due to his slickster style, underrated power and throwback dirty tactics....he'll be viewed well. Maybe not a HOFer but close to it.
