I'm with yu that his defense needs a little work, but that's the extent of it. He's only 25, Bro. Give the kid the benefit of the doubt. The guy's got a great attitude and from what I've gathered, a solid work ethic. There's certainly room and the likelihood for improvement.
I don't think Hatton is a good example since he is a Jr. WW, not a WW. Berto started off a MW if I remember correctly. Berto doesn't have it, I think he will end up being a elite gatekeeper.
He needs a top level trainer. He needs to get more comfortable in the ring and pace himself. He is fast, so he knows he can score his punches so he needs to work on using the correct punches a the right time and not gas out throwing useless flurries.
