Two of the best wins of this century for two of the best fighters.

BERNARD HOPKINS v FELIX TRINIDAD, 2001

    and

SHANE MOSLEY v OSCAR DE LA HOYA I, 2000

But which do you think was the better win of the two?

Hopkins-Trinidad is looking back on it. Mosely is surrounded by controversy now because of the recent steroid accusations.

There is an argument for either...But I made money on Hopkins beating Tito and I actually lent towards Oscar to beat Shane in their first fight.

Oscar arguably beat Tito at his best weight less then a year earlier and Shane was coming up.
Tito was a freight train tearing through 147-160..but was only at his second fight at 160 against the bigger man. Of course the level of dominance from Hopkins must be taken into consideration.

Also, nobody thought that Hopkins would dominate Trinidad the way he did.

  5. That might be an age thing. I saw Hop as a big (tall) MW cutting enormously and Felix as a small guy (because he was a skinny light welter when he started). I didn't think he had any chance of winning and certainly not of hurting Hop. Of course, he did grow into being a true middleweight (and Joppy surely must believe so). But, at the time, it seemed ridiculous if you had followed both fighter's careers from the beginning and in particular Hop's from the early 90s.

True, but generally Trinidad was expected to win so it would set up a big money fight with Roy Jones.

This is a good one, both wins made these guys as stars and potential future greats. The details of Mosley moving up are hard to argue against.. Flipside issue; De La Hoya had recently lost to Trinidad, controversy aside. Speaking of Trinidad - he was thought to be the Devil himself coming into the Hopkins fight. Long story, but I go with Hopkins.

  9. I can't argue that there wasn't more than a few that believed that at the time. I suspect it was a more a lack of familiarity with Hopkins than anything else. I doubt many older fans would have bought into that because everyone remembers Felix as basically a little scrawny guy. But I do recall that they were hyping FT to get to RJJ in the end.

  10. And then Hop agreeing to fight Oscar three years later gave nearly the same feeling as hearing he had agreed to fight the bum Hakkar in 2003. Seemed like two of the worst fights/mismatches imaginable. And they essentially were.

I see what you mean. Even Roy himself told Don King not to put Tito in with Hopkins because he knew Hopkins was going to beat him.

  12. Why don't you tell us so we'll know why one of the wins is better than the other? lol Waiting until the end, huh?

I thought with their history Mosley had a real chance of winning so it wasn't a huge surprise.

And no one thought that Hopkins would land a perfectly placed body shot
    on Oscar's Uterous.
