Why is Margarito fighting Shane for 2.5 mil when Paul Williams and Goosen...

Hopkins vs Pavlik - Pavlik knew he could never live with himself if he beat up an old man. Besides, Hopkins was like a role model to Pavlik.

RJJ vs CalZ - Jones threw that fight on purpose, he's going to comeback in a rematch against CalZ in Wales and he's gonna KO CalZ in front of all his fans.

Because Mosley has fought DLH twice and beaten him twice, more of the general population know who Mosley is as opposed to Williams.

Thus by fighting Mosley, Margarito is more likely to be exposed to more members of the general public.

Assuming that he beats Mosley (It is no guarantee) and he does it impressively, after the fight Margarito's name will be worth much more, probably more than enough to compensate for the 1.5 million that he lost by fighting Mosley over Williams.

So IF he manages to beat Mosley his earning potential increases much more than it would have done by fighting Williams.

IF he beats Mosley he MIGHT be in a position to ask for more than 4 million to fight Williams, also because Margarito will be more known to the general public Williams will also get paid more due to it being a much bigger fight.
